Why is this happening? My Black Rosecomb cock (about 18 months old) has been losing the white on his earlobes. They are getting red mostly just around the edges, but why all of a sudden? They have always been a nice bright white.
Thanks!

You might consider getting another feeder. We got one that hangs and will hold quite a bit of feed. I don't remember what I paid for it but it wasn't all that expensive. As to when to butcher, it depends on how big you want them. We butcher at ten to twelve weeks because we like...
The only place I have seen that will ship less than 25 is My Pet Chicken, but like you already said, they don't carry meatties. Sorry I can't think of anything else. Good luck!
I order my meaties from Welp. I have ordered from McMurry for the past 2 years in a row, but this year switched. Our fair judge last summer made the comment that Welp's cornish x's are superior to most other hatcheries birds that he sees , and that is the only place he uses to order his birds...
Where are you located? Are you anywhere near a hatchery that you could go pick them up? You might try your local feed store. Oftentimes they can order some for you, or they may know a local source. Another option is to try to find someone to split an order with you.

Do you mean the kind that you can use for rabbit litter? They are kinda in pellets? I have some of those laying around from a rabbit we had, but I never used them because I was worried the chickens would see them as food. I have seen the way they expand when they are wet, and didn't...
Personally I would let them eat free-choice for the first week or 2 and then start restricting their feed. Most people do 12 hours on and 12 hours off. We take ours off feed around 8 or 9 pm and give it back around 7 or 8 am.
Before we made our tractor, we raised our meat birds in one-half of our coop. The floor in there is concreate though so we had bedding down. We used pine shavings. By the time they were ready to butcher we were changing the bedding almost daily! Talk about expensive! They are just...
We feed ours 20% for the entire time. We get our cornish x's from Welp, and they recommend from day 5 on (yes, even baby chicks!) to take the feed out for 12 hours. They say 7p-7a, but we do more like 8 or 9p to 7a. We've always had good (read: tasty!) results!
If you are only doing the one bird, it would be simple enough to just hold the bird until it is done bleeding. It will only take a few minutes, but hold firmly!

I'm in SE Indiana (30 minutes to Harrison) and have taken ours to Huismann's in Harrison. One of the above posts listed them. They do a nice job. Drop off early and pickup after 3. They will charge you extra for the boxes though, so when you call to check prices, ask about boxes &...
My temps in the incubator were pretty decent, in the 99-101 range. However the hatcher runs just a little cooler, maybe 98. I am just keeping my fingers crossed and praying that something makes it. On a happy note though, my cat had kittens today!
I have 5 banty eggs in my hatcher and it is day 22 and there is NOTHING happening. How long do I give them before before I can be sure they are not going to hatch? Should I try candling them or anything?

I received 4-dozen hatching eggs from Superior Farms 21 days ago and they were not packaged well at all. They shipped 2-dozen in 2 large flat rate priority boxes. They had each individual egg wrapped with some toilet paper or maybe a paer towel and then put into a cardboard egg...
Well, I did move them over. The hatcher was holding a fairly consistant temperature and we put in a second hydrometer and that one said we were at 62%, so we moved them all. Re-candled on the move, and found we only have FIVE out of 42 eggs that are alive and well. I am so sad about that...
I am also a newbie so I was re-reading my chicken books tonight on incubating and hatching eggs and according to them, after a pip it could take anywhere from 3-8 hours for the chick to zip. So I would give it more time before helping.
Good luck on getting rest tonight!
I am on day 19 and...

Hmm... I DID wondered about putting them all in together. What I was concerned about though is the humidity? I think I need to have it at around 65% for days 18-hatch, and only around 45% from day 1-18? Maybe that is not right? I am so new to this, LOL! Will that high of humidity...
