I just signed my girls up for 4H and they want to start with turkeys -more specifically royal palm Toms. Good idea/breed? Any suggestions? I'm turning in their paperwork on Monday and need to know what I'm getting myself in to or get out off before it's too late haha
I dunked their beaks in water with Apple cider vinegar, they drank a bit and perked up some, piled up under the lamp and went back to sleep. Keeping my fingers crossed they'll be fine.
We just picked up six leghorn pullets from TSC about 4 hours, ago. So far they've been very quiet, extremely mellow. Usually our chicks are cheepy, energetic little things that sleep in a pile.
These are just kind of laying around not in the usual chick pile but just all around the tub they're...
Thank you donrae! We've decided to keep the Wyandottes and add them to the existing flock and sell eggs. The two silkies are feathering out nicely and looking pretty good so I think they'll do for our first time in out tiny county fair. I checked out Murray McMurray- definitely will be looking...
Thanks so much that is very frustrating but makes sense.
Thanks Mary for your thoughts as well. I don't want to invest too much as this is her first 4H year. If she truly gets into it I'll definitely be looking into quality show birds bred for showing for next year. Also a great idea to check...
I took my daughter to the local feed store and let her pick 6 one week old chicks marked as silkies for her 4H project. Well, 4 weeks later looks like we have two Wyandotte hens, two old English game bantam roos, and only two actual silkies.
I called the store telling them the problem. They...
Yes! I looked up OEGB I'm almost positive that's what we have. I'll be interested to watch both breeds feather out and grow. Still not our desired blue and partridge silkie hens but mystery solved at least. Thanks so much for all your help!!
I called the shop we got them from and even the manager who knows all the breeds they sell was stumped my my description of the grey. I emailed her pics and am hoping to hear back soon. They were all in the same brooder according to my daughter it was marked as all silkies. Definitely wont be...
Ah def won't be eating them. Just frustrated, she was told by the shop she had 6 silkies and came back with two silkies, two Wyandotte and two roosters Orpingtons. Oh well.. now to deal with my roosters
Ahh roosters?!? Help! Someone tell me what to do with roosters!! :/ my 12 to daughter went out for a few 4H silkies and came home with quite a menagerie! We're new to chickens so roosters really wasn't in the plans anytime soon.
Here's a few pics of the lavender and the possibly Wyandotte...
Hi! My daughter came home with 6 chicks. Two are obviously silkies and two each of these. They are so pretty and the grey (yes a little dirty in the pic) are amazingly friendly but what are they?? Thanks!
love this thread. We made some fatal errors and assumed we had less predators then we actually have which cost us some chickens. We're definitely city folk learning to be country! Think of every possible scenario. Holes, gaps, places where predators can reach through or chicken heads can poke...
She's not especially picked on. Our Barred rock who's the biggest, fattest hen gives everyone a hard time but im sure its because shes she's top hen. Since the top hen is our only barred rock in the original flock and the chicks are three more barred I wonder if that has anything to do with it...
We have a Rhode Island Red hen I'm a bit concerned about. As far as I can tell she's the bottom of the order which might explain her behavior? When we bring in fruit/ greens etc she often stays behind until the others lose interest then eats what is left which makes me think bottom. We often...
I just logged on because I'm having similar issues and was going to ask! Not trying to hijack your post but rather add:
We lost 3 of 10 to an attack. Hubby replaced with three more chicks. We've kept the chicks in a small coop and run within the big run. Now the chicks are appx 12 wks and...
