question about lighting in small coop?

My dog house converted into coop (pictures coming soon!!) is nearly completed. Total size is 30" x 40+" ( a little more with 12" nest box) for two standards who are now going on 5 weeks. I'm ready to get them out there but I'm wondering if; A. Should I still keep a light on in the coop? B...

    Solar lights for coop area :o}

I was looking at some of the ones you stick into the ground today to put around my run. I was wondering how much actual light they give off as I've never seen them in action. Anyone have a comparison that will help me out?

Has anyone tried nest boxes in the run?

I'm just wondering if this would do or if the nest box really needs to be attached to or in the coop. Pictures are appreciated!

Math help needed! (Figuring out how much hardware cloth for run.)

Quote: Is your run already built? If so, the main factor in your calculations will be where your existing vertical and horizontal supports are, because ideally you will want to fasten the edges of the wire to wood both horizontally and vertically. And, of course, how many feet of wire you...

Math help needed! (Figuring out how much hardware cloth for run.)

Quote: Ugh, would most like to avoid this situation. I'm not that worried about the perimeter but I would like to get the right amount for the run .

Math help needed! (Figuring out how much hardware cloth for run.)

I was thinking I would run the apron of wire around the perimeter rather then burying it.

Math help needed! (Figuring out how much hardware cloth for run.)

I'm building a covered run for my coop that is 4' deep x 6' long by 5' high. How much hardware cloth should I buy?

    Ebay and other places

I bought a similar style Ware brand chicken coop with my first three hens. I had it covered with a tarp during the wet months here in the PNW but it warped to the point the doors didn't really shut right. After year two it was still standing but it really showed some wear and tear. The wood on...

    Help!!! Chicken attacked, skin missing

Update... so far things seem ok. The feedstore gave me a product called "Rooster Booster" to keep the other hens from pecking at her but I have to say they don't seem to care at all. I tried to wash her but it was a disaster. Cleaned out the fridge and gave her all sorts of veggie scraps and and...

    Help!!! Chicken attacked, skin missing

Thank you.. I'm going to run out for blu-kote and neosporin now. She's a little wild so I'm not sure I can catch her but I'll try! The wound is a good 6-8" across and includes the bend in the wing.

    Help!!! Chicken attacked, skin missing

So I ended up leaving her in the coop last night. The two other girls were next to her on each side but not bothering her. I'm not sure what to do at this point, she's just hanging out in the coop.

    Help!!! Chicken attacked, skin missing

It hasn't been that long so I haven't noticed anything different. She wanted to go in the coop so I let her in. I'm going to check and see now if the other hens are bothering her. I feel so terrible.

    Help!!! Chicken attacked, skin missing

My aracauna was attacked today while I was away and I just found her. Her feathers are missing over 25% including skin. She's bleeding but not horribly. I can clearly see muscle in some areas. These are my first chickens and she is 2 years old. Help!!!!

three laying hens - Portland, Oregon

I have an American Aracauna, Buff Orpington, and Wyandotte that I would love to trade for some bantams. The girls are about two years old now and are great layers but too big for my yard.

    hen and dog, odd behavior?

The funny thing is he's not a regular humper at all! He did it a handful of times as a puppy and that was it. My other dog was a stud for three years and he hasn't given the chickens a second glance. It's so bizarre, I don't know what's gotten into him. They were so cute interacting before, the...

    hen and dog, odd behavior?

I have a 7 month old buff orpington hen that I can only assume is coming into her own as I caught my dog unusually "interested" in her and watched him attempt to mount her much to my surprise. I brought him inside right away of course but I can't believe what I saw! The terrible thing is they...

All my hens in the same nesting box!

Interesting. They do have a roost but they all still choose to go in the box. I've noticed they roost at times during the day even though they have free access to the yard. I'll start placing them on the roost when I shut them in at night. Should I take out the extra boxes and just leave the one?

All my hens in the same nesting box!

Oooo, good to know. So I can place them in each box but there's nothing stopping them from getting alll back into the same one again. Should I put in dividers?

All my hens in the same nesting box!

Well I have three hens and three nesting boxes but they all want to stay in one! They looks so funny all piled up, it gives me a giggle every night, but I'm wondering if there is any way I can lure them into the other boxes. No one is laying just yet.
