Midwest Chicken folks: how do you put your chicks outside?

Been reading about moving chicks from the brooder to the coop, and feeling a little concerned on how to do it. Was trying to get a handle on the temperatures that are ok for chicks, but you all know about the Midwest - one night it is 40 degrees, and the next night it is 70! Just like in the...

    Cleanliness and Hygiene: Best practices?

Total newbie here, and am looking for information about how you keep your coop clean, as well as other hygienic practices you do to keep you and your chickens healthy. We've got 24 little fluffy butts in our brooder and want to keep them (and us) from getting sick! For example, we do the...

Chicks pecking each other and eggs in incubator?

Thank you for that advice I will put down something for them to grip on... I think we have some of that shelf liner somewhere... My husband built the brooder for me out of some scrap lumber we had laying around, and we put an old screen door over it to keep the chicks safe from our cats...

    September Hatch-A-Long

Definitely me! I am running on coffee right about now Here's a pic of our very first fluffy butts, now in the brooder! We have two more that are drying out, and one that has to be the world's slowest hatcher... a BCM that is mostly zipped, but just hanging out in the shell for some reason. We...

Chicks pecking each other and eggs in incubator?

I think you are right about being hungry! The chicks were getting so lively that, with some misgivings, I quickly took them out of the incubator and put them in the brooder. Tried to get the incubator warmed up right away and back to temp. Sure enough, the chicks went right after the food! They...

    September Hatch-A-Long

I feel ya, Coopcop! This is my first hatch ever too -- the anticipation is crazy! I didn't sleep hardly at all last night and kept getting up to check on them. It got very cold here last night (we're in KS too, near Lawrence) and we actually turned the heat on because I was afraid the incubator...

Chicks pecking each other and eggs in incubator?

Thank you for the reply! Yes, I think one of the Black Copper Marans I have is a bit of a bossypants! I am wondering if it's a rooster because it was also the very first chick to hatch. It's just a very vigorous chick already! This is my very first batch of chickens ever, so I guess I thought...

Chicks pecking each other and eggs in incubator?

Is this ok? When should I intervene and what should be done? They haven't even dried out yet but some of them are pretty aggressive it seems like!

    Temperature drop! Freaking out!!!

The hatch is happening!!! We have gotten 7 chicks so far! One is working hard right now. I think the video is helping! It seems like the hatching chicks work a little harder when they hear it. I don't play it too much so they don't get tired, but it does seem to stir them up a bit!

    Temperature drop! Freaking out!!!

Feeling really hopeful! Have seen six eggs rocking now... and we have a pip! One of the black copper marans and we can see it moving! Two of the Ameraucana and three of the Easter eggers are the other movers. How did you add the humidity since they are locked down? I was thinking of just...

    Temperature drop! Freaking out!!!

HOPE!!!! We just heard some peeps! And one of the eggs is rocking! Omg, I am so nervous and excited!!! We can't stop staring at the eggs! I know this is crazy, but my son has a laptop and we put it near the eggs and are playing broody hen sounds to encourage the chicks! We just youtubed...

    Temperature drop! Freaking out!!!

Looks like temps are getting back to where they should be... over the past 90 mins, they have risen to 95 degrees, as measured on the mesh. Going to keep an eye on them over the next few hours now to make sure they don't get TOO hot due to our knob adjustments. Ugh, I have barely had to adjust...

    Temperature drop! Freaking out!!!

Thanks for the reply! We do have the incubator indoors, so the weather might not be as much of an issue. But our house definitely got quite a bit colder over the last couple of days! Have had to break out the jackets and jeans for the humans... Ack! I forgot to put the thermometers on top of...

    Temperature drop! Freaking out!!!

Hi everyone, Feeling seriously freaked out and worried because this morning our termperature in the incubator dropped to something around 80 degrees! What the heck happened?!? Last night was Day 18, so we candled the eggs for the last time and weighed them. Everything was looking good, good...

    September Hatch-A-Long

So exciting watching some of the Sept chicks hatching! Congrats!!! It's early days for us yet, today is Day 8. Trying to control myself and not candle because we candled on Day 5 and I don't want to disturb them too much... we have Easter Egger eggs that were very easy to see into, Ameraucana...

Really super specific questions about candling

Thank you for the tips! We did end up candling today, and (I think?) it went pretty well. No dropped eggs, the kids had fun with it and we wrote numbers of each egg so we could keep track of their progress. There were a couple that seemed clear, but many had spidery veins visible which was...

Really super specific questions about candling

Hi everyone, I've been reading up about candling because we have our very first batch of eggs (and also, these will be our first chickens ever as well) set and supposed to hatch on Sept. 14! I am a total newbie and so begging pardon if these questions have been asked before, but I have some...
