Had our first loss to a predator last night. *sad*

So sorry for your loss. I was devastated and mad as heck when a mother fox and her three babies got all four if our young pullets in one day. I don't know if this will help with raccoons, but I swear by using wolf urine. You can find it directly by googling predator pee or on my pet chickens...

Baby Chicks versus Juvenilles to start flock

I thought I had a Mareks scare with a hen showing some leg issues. It definitely turned out to not be Mareks, but if it was, my flock and grounds would be contaminated forever. (From what I understand) The scare really opened my eyes to all of the poultry diseases and that proper bio security...

Baby Chicks versus Juvenilles to start flock

Fancynancy. I am no expert by any means, but I had a Mareks disease scare this week and with everything I read, your chances for bringing in diseases like mareks or Newcastle and viral infections is greatly reduced with day old chicks from a healthy and reputable hatchery. The older the bird, I...

Baby Chicks versus Juvenilles to start flock

I think another important point to consider is that with day old chicks you have better ability to control any diseases brought into the flock and your grounds like Mareks.

First case of bumble foot...any advice appreciated!

She started limping when it was unseasonably warm, so not thinking frost bite. Maybe an infection of some sorts. One other person suggested infectious synovitis. They both look red, but only one is swollen. It is driving me crazy. At least she seems to be hanging in there and there are no more...

First case of bumble foot...any advice appreciated!

Thanks for that link Alaskan! I read up on it quite a bit and determined it probably isn't bumble foot. The hens feet are both a bit redder than normal and one is a bit swollen. No other symptoms and no other sick birds. She is doing okay and keeping up with the flock. She roosted for the...

Baby Chicks versus Juvenilles to start flock

I was surprised by how easy raising my first flock of chicks was once I did my homework and was well prepared. I have also had four week old chicks shipped from mcmurray hatchery. It was expensive though!! It is a lot of waiting for eggs when you get chicks, but you also get a much higher level...

Thank you for the response bantamFan!!! I looked it up and couldn't find anything solid about treatment and prognosis for the rest if the flock? How is it contracted?

    Limping chicken with red feet/ankles

My very large Buff Orp hen, about 30 weeks old, went lame two days ago. She has been laying around and hobbling as needed. I soaked her feet and after a close inspection, found no sores or bumblefoot. Checked her abdomen for an egg after soaking her vent which was pulsing and contracting a lot...

Buff orp rooster or hen survey.

Thank you everyone! It is much appreciated. I am amazed at how much larger she is than everyone else, even her hatch mate. She is a BIG bird. Looking forward to some eggs!

Buff orp rooster or hen survey.

Thank you Jennianne. This bird is the very last to develop a comb and waddle very far behind the others but it's just so much larger. Anyone seeing any saddle feathers ????
