Slow/sour crop or yeast infection in mother hen

Hi again, After some discussions on here last night, I have determined that my hen probably has slow/sour crop or a yeast infection in the crop. However, she's mothering two chicks right now, and I'm not sure how to handle it as all treatments talk about taking her away from the flock and...

Advice for a possibly sick chicken (or is it just a new mum thing?)

Thanks for that! I'll check her crop in the morning. The other hen was sitting for a week before she got eggs under her. The unhatched egg has been there 3 and half weeks now (so for and a half all together). But I think I will just go for the day old chick under her! I just hope she comes out!

Advice for a possibly sick chicken (or is it just a new mum thing?)

Yeah.. sorry. They're a complicated flock of hens!! When I tried moving the original hen away from the flock, she destroyed 3 eggs (I originally had 6), and refused to sit on the rest, but when I returned her to the coop she continued to sit! So I just left her in there. Then another hen went...

Advice for a possibly sick chicken (or is it just a new mum thing?)

I did try candling with my mag light, but the light didn't show through. I couldn't get a room dark enough (it was the middle of the day when the hen hoped off the nest for a feed). The float test seemed to show the egg was fertile though. This egg is also a different breed to the two that have...

Advice for a possibly sick chicken (or is it just a new mum thing?)

Hi Sonya9, There were 3 eggs and two broody hens. 2 eggs have hatched and one hen left the nest with them, but 1 is left, with the original broody hen. I had a look around on forums and quite a few people have said they had eggs hatch at up to 28 days, especially if they had hens 'time...

Advice for a possibly sick chicken (or is it just a new mum thing?)

Hi all, I've recently purchased my first lot of fertile eggs to put under broody hens. One of my chickens sitting on the clutch for 4 weeks. Another went broody in this time and has been sitting for 2 weeks (they were sharing the eggs). 2 chickens have hatched and the one who has been...

    Broody hens taking turns?

I'm so glad to hear this is a normal thing! Except I think now 3 our of my 4 chickens are broody and not laying. Good thing I'm adding more to the flock now!

How long does it take a broody hen to start laying again?

I'm struggling with this issue right now too. This is fantastic! I will have to give the cayenne and cornmeal a go! Sounds so crazy, but if it works!

Is leaving a broody chicken ok?

Goodness! I thought they would be a little more logical than that! Thanks for the tip. I tried closing the nesting box off one night and put her on the roost with the other birds, but she spent quite a bit of time pecking at the wood a sat in front of it before she actually settled down and got...

Is leaving a broody chicken ok?

Hi All, I'm a first time chicken owner in Australia and my Australorp, who has only been laying for about 4 weeks, has gone broody. I've seen a lot of topics on how to try and break your chicken out of her broodiness, but I was wondering if it's ok to just let her be until she gets over it...

    Moving chicks outside

I weaned them down to about 20 degrees c, so the light never comes on anymore. But the box idea sounds good. It's a 1.6m square coop, but blocking off a bit at night time will be much easier than my current moving them from one place to another. Thanks for your help everyone!

    Moving chicks outside

Hi all! I live in Australia where it's currently about 28 degrees celsius (82.4 fahrenheit) during the day but gets down to 12 degrees (53.6 fahrenheit) over night. My chicks are just on 4 weeks old and have outgrown the brooder set up I had for them. I am currently letting them run around...
