Hello All, It's been a while since I've been online. I have had a serious coyote/fox problem this winter and have lost most of my flock. I have patched my coop, reinforced my henhouse, installed doors I put concrete blocks in front of at night and for the past two weeks everyone is still...

    Entering lockdown!!!!

Hartching eggs is a wonderful and horrible experience. I have to force myself not to get too excited. I only count on a 50% hatch rate. I know I kill more than I bring into the world. I set my expectations very low and hope for the best. Day 22 on the second set of eggs due to hatch in my...

I keep a thermostat in my brooder box too. But I really watch the chicks. Are they grouped together in a huddle .... too cold, are they way away from the light..... too hot. Are they under the light and active..... just right! The fuzzy butts know what to do.

    Chickens and Fire Ants

Let the chickesn eat the fire ants. We live in SC and had hundreds of fire ant piles before we got chickens. Now, not a one. The chickens will destroy an ant pile and the ants will never come back. The fire ants don't seem to bother the chickens like they do us. Best ant control EVER.

    Mixing Bantams and Large Chickens

I am hatching some Banties now. I use 8ft dog pens as my run. I was going to add a section alongside the existing run so the banties and the full size chickens and see each other for a while before I let them mix. I let my flock free range during the day and thought this method help the youngins...

How high do chickens jump? Fencea advice

I won't worry as much about keeping your chickens in as I would keeping, dogs, cats, hawks and kids out. Chickens won't leave if they have a good gig going on. But EVERYTHING else will be trying to get in! Go at least as high as you are willing to stoop and cover with chicken wire.

When to lockdown? This might help U.

Thanks for the chart. I see from this chart lockdown is actually four days and not three. That would explain why I sometimes have chicks hatching on the day I start lockdown. I count out three weeks and then back count back three days. I put eggs in the bator this morning. I usually use the...

I have 12 babies that were hatched on Halloween in the garage cage waiting to go the big pen. The roosters are trying to crow. Do you think its time to move them? Because the DH is about to have a fit if I don't.
