That is possible I guess. We got two gingers about the same time and they are pretty bonded. Maybe Belle is being a little over enthusiastic about Hattie’s appearance!
Hi all - my Hattie has a bald patch that seems to be getting worse. We noticed it a little over a month ago and put it down to molting, but I don’t think so now. We’ve checked carefully for mites, lice, etc, and see no evidence. There’s a little red spot, but that’s all I can see. Any ideas...
Thanks again for your help. It does appear she had a weird egg in there. I went out this morning and found it in a huge blast radius of poop. It almost looked like it contained bits of oyster shell. I got her to an avian vet about an hour after that, and she seems to be fine now. The vet is...
My duck Hazel is at least 6 years old. She hasn’t laid any eggs in more than a year. The past week or so, she has been racing to the oyster shell and chowing down on it. Yesterday, I thought she was entering her “psycho stage,” which is not out of the ordinary. Both she and her sister will phase...
She is fine today. I think it was just a soft shell egg with a tail. I found a big wet spot in the hen house this morning when I went to check on her. The chickens must have eaten most of it. I'm still upping her calcium and giving some vitamins, but she did lay a beautiful, normal egg for me today.
Tonight my hen came running to me so I could put her to bed as she does every night. I usually take the opportunity to check her over, and tonight I was horrified to see what looked like party of a soft shell egg hanging from her vent. Only it was attached. I didn't know if it was a soft shell...
Wow, that must be what's happening. They haven't eaten them (yet), but I worry that they will before I can get there to let them out. I wish she'd learn Turi just sleep in the nest box!
I have one Black Australorp, Myrtle, and the rest are bantams. Myrtle has been a great layer for close to a year, she's just about a year and a half old. She is the only one of my flock who lays large brown eggs, everyone else lays cute little bantam eggs.
She has done this twice in the past...
We have four chickens and two Muscovy hens, maybe a year and a half old or close to two. About every other month, one of them will stop laying, then the other. Maisie usually starts it, then Hazel follows into madness. Normally like puppies with feathers, they run from us, get aggressive with...
We've been keeping the ducks out in the yard all the time while the chickens go into the coop all day. We let them all out together in the morning and again in the evening before they go in for the night. I watch, and have broken the duck out of a stealth attack mode several times. It been...
Both hens. Muscovy duck that is normally peaceable and even cuddly but since she started molting won't let me get near her. The silkie is the same one that was "sick" the other day. She seemed to have recovered, so I released her from her kennel in the kitchen back to the other chickens. I now...
My Martha scared hell out of me last night when I went out to let my girls out for their nightly free range before bedtime: she was collapsed under the ramp up to the hen house. I thought she was dead. She wasn't, so I picked her up and examined her gently. I could find nothing obvious, so we...
Maisie has recovered beautifully! She is molting now, but the new feathers coming in look beautiful! Thank you so much for your help - I now keep a little jar of coconut oil out by the coop!
My Muscovy, Maisie, has been broody for weeks, but her pal (another Muscovy) has been fine. During this time Maisie has become deranged. She practically refuses to get in the water, but behaves as though she is bathing - she ruffles, splashes, preens, but doesn't get into the water. She will...
