    Mites :-(

UPDATE: I just realized I made a mistake with the dilution of the premethrin, and made a WAY higher concentrate than the label directions. It's been 2 days and the hens seem ok, so I assume they will be alright, although I'm glad I kept them out of the coop for 2 days. I was also able to catch...

    Mites :-(

I'm pretty sure we've got mites. A few of the hens have been looking a big ragged, and I cleaned out the pine chips in the coop 2 days ago and noticed a patch of tiny gray bugs (very tiny) crawling around on the floor. The weather has also been excessively hot and humid. I am trying to remediate...

Will nesting box pads stop my problem?

Yes, I have discovered they are such copycats :-( I guess just continuing to cover the poop or continuing to block off the boxes at night is my only option. I thought about getting plastic insertable boxes (my boxes are part of the coop, it juts out on one side with a lid outside the run that I...

Will nesting box pads stop my problem?

Yes they are higher. Basically my coop design sucks, but my father built it for us, so that's what we got. Problem is that they aren't roosting. They are sleeping sitting in the nest boxes, and the ones that don't fit sleep nestled on the coop floor. I'm ready to give them away, but my kids...

Will nesting box pads stop my problem?

I have 9 hens. 3 BOs that never learned to roost, and later we hatched 6 more RIRs that DID roost (because we added a better roosting bar). The BOs have been sleeping in the egg boxes pretty much since we moved them outside into the coop 3 years ago. I put big flowerpots in the egg boxes at...

Random tiny egg from grown hen?

We have 6 RIRs that are almost a year old, and 3 BO's that are 2.5 years old. The BOs don't seem to be good layers, as we usually only get 6 eggs per day, sometimes 7. I think only 1 is laying anymore, and 1 I don't think ever laid eggs. Today I found this one tiny egg. Why would that happen...

    Spent grain

Ok, thanks everyone! I feed 18-20% protein plus grubs a few times a week, and other than grubs and the occasional veggie scraps, they don't get treats. I will use it as scratch/treats and leave their feeder full of regular food. They really seem to like the beer grains!

    Spent grain

We got a bucket of spent grain from a local brewery today, and I thought I'd ask of those more knowledgeable than I - how much of their diet is it ok for the spent grains to make up? Can I feed it to them for the next 3 days or so until the bucket is gone, or should it only be more of an...

What is wrong with these eggs?

The first one is enormous (next to a regular egg for reference), and it always has a double yolk and has a ring around it as if 2 eggs combined into one. The other egg has a firm shell but is all wrinkled and misshapen. We get one of each of these every 1-2 days. For a while we were getting 1...

Permethrin spray- what else do I need?

My chicken-keeping headaches got worse this week with the discovery of what we think are northern red mites. I plan to get permethrin spray this weekend at TSC, but I've never done this before, and my coop setup really stinks, so I was wondering what else will I need to apply the permethrin? A...

Who is laying all these tiny eggs?

The two on the right are about half the size of the one on the left, which is the size of a "large" or "extra-large" supermarket egg

Who is laying all these tiny eggs?

We have 3 hens just about 2 years old, and 6 pullets that are 21 weeks old. One of our 3 hens has always been smaller and weaker than the others, and quite frankly, I don't think she ever laid any eggs. When we only had 3, we would only get 1-2 eggs per day, and I'm 99% sure none were from...

At what point do I stop wondering if we have a rooster?

I think that's all of them. I have a strong feeling they are all female, I just find it incredibly hard to believe that out of 11 chickens (5 bought as chicks, 6 hatched by us), we didn't get a single rooster!

At what point do I stop wondering if we have a rooster?

[/IMG] I made an attempt as they were out in the yard, but a few of them are skittish and run away when I get too close. I will try again later when they are back in the run. There has been some chasing, but no mounting that I've noticed. Hopefully I can get better pics when they are more...

At what point do I stop wondering if we have a rooster?

Our 6 RIRs were 17 weeks old this past Friday, hatched here in an incubator, ordered from a hatchery. I have yet to hear anybody crow, and none of them look different than the others. One has a redder, bigger comb than the others, but the 3 BO 2 year old hens we have all have different...

I saw that article.....I checked my water authority's website and the report mentioned chlorine as a disinfectant but I didn't see chloramine anywhere
