    Hen Laying at Night?

I have a flock of 7 red sex linked hens - all laying since early winter - getting six or seven eggs each day in the nesting boxes. About a week ago, I started finding a single egg almost every day beneath the roosts in the morning. The egg is completely cold, so I assume it ended up there during...

    Any Home Bakers Here?

Yes, egg yolk. I wish I could say eggs were from my flock, but my young hens have only recently started laying (2 of 7). Recipe is based on this one: https://www.chefsteps.com/activities/croissant-dough substituting wild starter culture for commercial yeast. Also subbed A/P flour for pastry...

    Any Home Bakers Here?

Does winter arrest layer development or just slow it down?

Thank you. That makes sense. Is there something you would recommend adding to their layer feed to supply the additional protein?

Does winter arrest layer development or just slow it down?

During the day the have access to all the layer feed and water they want. At night, they have no food or water.

Does winter arrest layer development or just slow it down?

I think I understand. But how about the one hen that is laying every day? She's not getting 14 hours of light.

Does winter arrest layer development or just slow it down?

And what would be the outcome if they remain with natural light?

Does winter arrest layer development or just slow it down?

I have 7 red sex-link hens that are now 24 weeks old. At exactly 20 weeks, one of the girls started laying and has blessed me with an egg every single day since. The other 6 - zilch, nada. Just about the time the first girl started laying, cold weather descended (40-50's during the day, 20's at...

    Crowing at 4:30-4:54am. Why?

Chickens see sunrise almost an hour earlier than humans due to their sensitivity into infrared spectrum

Areas where it snows- chicken runs

I'm using these clear PVC panels: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Palruf-26-in-x-8-ft-Clear-PVC-Roof-Panel-100423/100038031 to cover the top of the run as well on the windward sides. This is my first winter with hens, so I can't yet recommend my approach, but I can say that many of the PVC panels...

    Wireless Thermometers

Which camera did you get? Maybe I will do it someday. What I would like to do is to see them at night in their coop when there are cuddled up and sleeping. That would probably involve some kind IR light source. After reading about chicken vision...

    Wireless Thermometers

I wanted some way of remotely monitoring the temps and humidity for my new flock for their first winter. Their pen (Cluckingham Palace) is completely enclosed in 1/2" hardware mesh cloth. The bad news is that this acts as a pretty effective Faraday cage - no wireless signals getting in or out...

Do I need to supply water at night?

High-desert climate here (7000' feet above sea level). Some snow, but it melts/sublimates quickly from strong sun. All of the pen could be covered to keep snow out, but for now I'm planning just to cover area over the coop, waterer and feeder.

Do I need to supply water at night?

Thank you, KayTee, for the very helpful response, which was exactly what I was hoping for. The coop has an automated door on a photocell which opens at first light, so the girls have access to food and water as soon as they wake up. My main fear was that the increased food intake during cold...

Do I need to supply water at night?

New chicken guy here. I have a small, insulated coop inside a large fenced-in pen. The girls (now about 15 weeks) spend all day frolicking outside in the pen and spend all night sleeping in the coop. I have food and water both inside the coop and outside in the pen. Best I can tell, they NEVER...

    Injured Leg?

Stupid, idiot kids down the block terrified my flock of 6-week old chicks by setting off firecrackers on July 4th. The poor chicks were completely freaked out, climbing all over each other to try to escape the inescapable assault on their ears. The next morning one of them was limping when...

Nesting boxes - when to make available?

New backyard chicken guy here. Female chicks (Golden Buff x 7) are coming up to the point where they will moved from the brooder to their permanent coop. They won't be laying eggs for a few more months, so I'm wondering what is the best practice for their nesting boxes until then. My inclination...
