Thanks for the welcome!. I'm just south of you in Pocatello. Do you know if there is anyone in the area that has dorkings?
What kind of birds do you have?
Just recently moved to southeast Idaho and thought I'd introduce myself and my flock:
I have 4 royal palms: 1 tom & 3 hens. It's my first time with turkeys.
I also picked up a laying flock consisting of 4 barred rocks, 3 black star, 1 red star, and a brown leghorn.
I've had different...
Monday evening came home from work to 3 babies and 6 eggs (1 egg broke about a week and a half in). Yesterday morning there were 7 babies and last night when I got home, there were 8 babies! I'll leave the last egg until tonight when I get home. I figure with the cold temps, maybe it's just...
I don't know the answer but I see you're in TN. I'm just north of you in Kentucky and I just put 10 eggs under my broody on the 1st so I guess we'll learn together. My philosophy tends to be that mother nature knows what she's doing...
I haven't been on the forum for awhile so missed this thread. I set 10 "barnyard surprise" eggs under my broody and due on the 21st. Good luck everyone!
I know how you feel. I just hatched out 9 last week. Are you a member of the yahoo Barnevelder's group? I would love to have you pm me. I couldn't find that button on your contact info.
I think it's a great idea. I am a picture framer by trade and I know that my sales reps put on many miles and usually cover a 3-4 state area. I don't know if they would have company policies regarding that sort of thing but I have good relationships with many of them and wouldn't hesitate to...
My hen was nice the whole time she was brooding as well but... watch out after she hatched those babies. She's like a whole other creature now! But that's good, I know those babies are well cared for. It was just a surprise for her to change so suddenly but now I'm just careful around her.
I woke up this morning to 10 fluffy babies. One had gotten out of the egg but passed away and two eggs have no pips. Here's pics of some of the new babies. These are all barnevelders. Poor Millicent is going crazy trying to keep 10 of them in line!
Nothing as of this morning. I won't get home until 8 tonight. Hopefully Mother Nature is doing her thing because I'm dying. It seems like the people using incubators are having their chicks hatch out at 19 and 20 days rather than longer time frames. Does it just take longer when the hen sets...
One of my eggs got broken under the broody so I've still got 13 under her but haven't candled. It will be a surprise in more ways than 1 I'm sure! Hope everyone else's is going well.
kagedgoddess, your kids must be having the most fun! If I had kids I definately would be candling too. It's just my personal philosophy to try and let everything be as natural as possible. My husband thinks I'm nuts and my two dogs are loving all of the extra attention
I don't think I'm going to candle my eggs. I'm just going to let Mother Nature take care of business. I did lose one egg to breakage so I cleaned that out of the nest. 13 left... and still just over two weeks to go. I've exercised a lot and am doing more book reading this week just to take...
Hazelnut, I've looked at pictures of buttercup combs and hers doesn't seem to have as much space in between the little nubs. We're unsure of how old she is though. Maybe it will develop more if she is young and still has some maturing to do. It is pretty red but we still haven't gotten any...
My DH got this free hen for me from a friend of our neighbor. I think she's pretty but looking for input as to what she may be. She does not have a single comb. It looks like two rows of small points. Thanks in advance!
I just got 4 laying hens a month ago and 1 went broody so I just set 14 barnevelder eggs under her Sunday night. This is worse than waiting for Christmas!
