Here are a couple of photos. The eyes are open. After watching it for awhile it acts like it can see, but seems confused about what to do and how to be a chick. It has 11 others to learn off of, lol. I have tried the tapping to see if it would follow the sound or peck like the others do. No...
I am not new at raising chicks, but this is a new one on me. I have a 2 day old porcelain d'uccle that seems blind. It is a runt compared to the five others. It seems to have issues finding and accurately hitting the mark when trying to eat or drink. I have boosted with Nutri-drench and hand fed...
Things to keep in mind when figuring space requirements per bird, each standard size bird requires 4sq. ft. or more of floor space in the coop and 10sq. ft. or more run space. I am not versed in bantam space requirements but I am sure someone can pipe in on that. We have a 10x16 barn shed that...
In order to save a lot of money I buy my 8" and 11" rolls in 50' lengths on ebay. I bought a 2 pack that included 1 of each for $24. They are thicker than regular Foodsaver and work great. Compared to the brand name I saved a ton and I can make bags in any size that I need.
We recently slaughtered 6 chickens. I left them whole and used an 11 inch roll to vac seal them. I have a Foodsaver sealer and didn't have any issues with moisture, fit, or sealing. The birds ranged in weight from 5 1/4lbs. to 7lbs. each. I have used freezer paper in the past and still dealt...
Unfortunately, when I got home from work all three had passed. :( I think I am going to give up on shipped eggs! The first 15 Legbar eggs I got were all failures and so were these 8. I always set some from my own flock to validate incubation practices. I didn't have much hope for these shipped...
Well, I am going to have to bow out. The eggs I wanted to set have not shown up yet and my egg orders are getting backed up. Business over pleasure I guess.:/
Ok, here is the deal. I received 8 shipped eggs. I placed them along with 14 of my own flocks eggs in the incubator. We are at day 21 and all but 2 of my flocks eggs have hatched. The 2 that haven't have internal pips and plenty of chirping. Out of the 8 shipped only 1 has made it to this point...
I'm in! I just set eggs to hatch the 7th so I will have time to clean, sanitize, and fire back up just in time! I'm not sure what I will set yet though.:hu
Speckled Sussex, Cream Legbars, and Black Copper Marans have caught my eye! I would have a rainbow basket of eggs daily with those breeds and my current Buff Orps and Cinnamon Queens.
I will be placing an order in a couple of weeks for some cornish X's. We will raise, slaughter, and package them as whole birds. They are $4ea. to cover the cost of the bird, feed, slaughter, and packaging. If anyone would like in on the order message me.
I, also, have 2 pairs of RIR roosters...
We got our new batch of chicks today! YAY!
Black Orpington
Gold Laced Wyandotte
Dark Cornish
4 White Rocks
We haven't named them yet they have to earn them. :P
They will be joining our Buff Orps, RIR, Cinnamon Queens, and Lavender Orps in 3 different project coops.
My husband says I am...
He is in isolation and I gave him a scrambled egg. He wasn't real happy with the egg but he did eat some. He has been eating, drinking, and acting normal. The only evidence of a problem is right after he goes to the bathroom.
I have a 7 week old lavender orp chick who is no doubt a roo. Whenever he goes to the bathroom his vent prolapses and then goes back in. It is obviously causing hime discomfort because he fluffs up and does what can best be described as a velociraptor call after. I have no clue if or how it can...
This link has a great chart explaining what percentages you will get using the black and how to get back to 100% lavender chicks. It also has information on the lavender orp breed and why you should breed back to black.

The OP asked for opinions and we are all entitled to our own. Yes, that bird was created by man's dominion interferring. So, because of that the bird will have and is exhibiting signs of health issues related to that. We are the guardians of the animals we keep, it is our responsibility to make...
