Also, homegrown birds tend to be a bit more tough than store bought but shouldn't be rubbery.

    Rubbery chicken

How long did you wait after butcher to eat them? I wait 3 days with them in the fridge before I freeze or cook them. Helps them to be not rubbery.

Will they blacken out? are they purebred?

They look like mixes to me. They seem too "bulky" to me to be pure Indians plus they aren't standing up straight (maybe just in these pics?). They look like blue sweeds a little bit. But they are very pretty. *newbie*

My fav "she" is likely a "he"...do I have too many boys now?

I dont think you'll have a problem with the males. Usually one will be dominant. I had two Roos and only two girls. Mine did fine. The less dominant roo just stayed out if the way of the "boss".

I had silkie whose feet began to swell and blister. I kept her in the house to try and treat her. She smelt so bad. I thought it was an infection. The blisters and swelling went away but she was left with hard, black, dehydrated, unmovable feet. I realized that her feet had died. We had a lot of...

Has it been snowing and/or extremely cold where you are? It looks to me like she has severe frost bite. Did it start with swollen blistered feet?

    Questions for Silkie owners

I got a single silkie hen because i wanted a broody that was also very gentle and sweet. Cinderella, as named by my son, is very sweet unless she's brooding. Then she will tear your hand apart if you try to touch her eggs or babies. She is an excellent mother as well. Very protective and very...

Duck "house" and other winter questions

Just in case you haven't figured out who's duck and who's drake: The females have a very loud quack and the males have a quieter "i've been a chain smoker for years" quack.
