Okay, thanks! I won't stress so much then. Temperature in here stays right around 70 so maybe for the rest of the week I'll keep the lamp off during the day to kind of harden them off for night in the coop!
Hi guys!! So I have a quick question for y'all. We currently have 27 chicks in a brooder in our house. They're all between 2-3 weeks and have been thriving little chicks! But last night we had a bad storm and at some point in the middle of the night a breaker must have tripped because I woke up...
Thanks!
The rest of the chicks are doing great. They're all eating and drinking, and I found the marbles and put them in the waterer. I'll have to try giving them some scrambled eggs! They did catch a grasshopper earlier, it was super cute! There are two of them, an EE and a BCM, that run up...
Thank you! :) They're so precious, I don't think I'll ever try another broody hen after this experience. I could just sit in the garage and watch them sleep all day.
Good ideas! I had marbles around here somewhere, and my husband cleaned the garage so naturally they disappeared. As soon as he's home we'll track them down!
Heading out to put a small tray of food out now, and then heading to the "what breed is this" board to see if I can find any chicks that...
Well, the little chick passed. :(
I tried what I could, but she didn't respond to anything. Her eyes wouldn't track movements, wouldn't open her mouth, no movement apart from shallow breathing. I wrapper her in a washcloth and tucked her in my cleavage, thinking maybe it'd help if she heard my...
Some not so great news...
One of our eggs hasn't hatched/rattled/pipped/peeped all day. I'm beginning to think the chick didn't make it, but I'm still waiting. All of the rest have hatched, so we have seven chicks! However, one has a bit of yolk that still hasn't been absorbed...acting normal...
I wish! I have two toddlers....no rest for me today! I'm definitely going to go to sleep early tonight, though.
Gotta go set up a brooder for them, I'm sure it won't be long and they'll all be hatched! I'm so excited you guys, I can't believe we pulled this off.
Sorry it took so long for me to respond, but thank you for all of your support!! We have five little chicks, and three more eggs pipping! I did help that little chick, she was shrink wrapped. I just did what chicapee suggested, and then waited until she kicked herself out. (That was around 3:30...
I don't even know what that means. (The air cell part.) Haha. I'm in over my head!!
That egg is almost a perfect oval, but the pip is in the right place near the round end.
Should I assist soon, or wait?
We have two babies, both came from my only two blue eggs!
I'm worried about a couple of the other eggs though. The one that is open the most was the first to pip. She's not rotating at all, and I can see the clear membrane has pulled away from the egg and is stuck against her. She still chirps...
She's one of our new girls. When we decided to get chickens I did a bunch of research and decided I wanted buff orpingtons. Of course, when we were finally ready for them there were none available, and we ended up with quite a variety! I finally found two BOs and got them last week, and they...
I think what was making it so hot was being outside. It's so hot and humid here already I thought that would help, but now I'm getting a steady reading of 98.6 since I brought them inside. Better for me anyways, I've been sweating like crazy from staring at them in our hot shed. Lol.
Of course...
No outdoor thermometer, but the rectal thermometer read 101.8 so I have taken them inside, set them up with another sponge, and now I'm waiting to get a steady reading. I can see three active little beaks though! Do I need to set a shallow water dish in there tonight just in case they hatch...
Okay, so I moved them into a smaller tub that I could halfway cover, lined it with a moist towel and moist paper towel, and also added a wet sponge. It seems so hot though, I'm scared I'm going to fry them! All I have are rectal or ear thermometers so I'm nervous that I'm not getting it right...
Here's so you can see the pips. I'm trying to keep the membrane moist because I can't get the humidity high enough, should I cover them with a wet paper towel? Help them hatch? Leave them alone?
This is my first time hatching eggs. I had them under a broody and they started hatching today. The first chicks hatched and the hen killed it! Now I have six more that are pipping, three that aren't pipping yet, and the hen has abandoned the nest. I had another broody that I tried to get to...
One of ours has hatched, four more pipping, but the chick that hatched was dead under Lulu. She had eaten the shell, not sure if she killed it? Since we have another broody we moved her and the hatching nest into a dog crate. She settled on the right away. I'm panicking though! Considering going...
