    Mud in the run

I have four hens in a coop with access to a run area that is covered with corrugated roofing and tarps for shade and rain protection. Even so, when it rains parts of the ground get very muddy which doesn't seem to bother the birds, but it is slippery for me and smells bad. Should I put down...

Light bulbs inside coop at night

Thanks for all the good advice! I love the idea of using the old feed bags - I have dozens of them and usually recycle to the feed store, but will place them in the boxes now! We have resorted to an electric fence around our vegetable garden in the summer to keep the deer out - they are...

Light bulbs inside coop at night

Thanks for the response! No other reason to keep light on. They do roost snuggled side by side.

Light bulbs inside coop at night

The nights in Santa Cruz are not freezing, but do dip into the high thirties and low forties. Is it o.k. to leave a 60 watt light bulb on at night for 4 month olds or is that not necessary and does it mess up their internal clock? Chris Patton

    Water in coop at night

Is it necessary to have food and water available inside the coop? After the chickens have come in and are roosting for the night I close the opening to keep it warm but the food and water are outside in the run. I have two older chickens and I have never left food or water inside, but now...

    California - Northern

I live in Santa Cruz and have always thought of myself as a Northern Californian (5th generation, my mother and ancestors are from Salinas). Can I be part of the Northern California group? Also, I commuted to San Francisco for ten years before retiring, and my daughter and her husband live in...

How to tell if a chick is a cockerel

Thanks for all the advice. Here are two photos from today, he (probably) is 8 1/2 weeks old - Cuckoo Marans. Being new, I think I should have posted on What breed/sex is this Forum instead of this one. Will switch to there next. Would love to hear your verdict! Chris

How to tell if a chick is a cockerel

Hi! This is my second post, new to the site: We have been getting our chicks from a local feed store for years and always lucked out with all girls. This time we bought two Cuckoo Marans and two New Jersey Giants who are now 8 weeks old, and one of the Marans is exhibiting signs of maleness...
