This is our third time buying and raising baby chicks, and the second time we've purchased from McMurray hatchery. This year we bought 10 White Orpington roosters, 10 Light Brahma roosters, 10 Delaware roosters, 1 Ameracauana hen, 1 Brown Leghorn hen. We also have 2 Black Copper Marans from a...
We got good dressed (butchered) weight from Blue/Black Orpington roosters (dressed weight was around 4-5 pounds after 16-20 weeks of growth), we got a less impressive dressed weight from our recent run of White Plymouth Rock roosters (dressed weight averaged around 3.75 pounds after 16-20...
We will certainly try them -- we didn't love the way that the dark feathers made the dressed bird look, so we're going to get some White Orpingtons from McMurray this time (along with a couple other breeds just as a comparison - probably Brahmas and Delawares since we've pretty much nixed Jersey...
All we want is a dressed bird between 4-5 pounds. We butchered some blue and black Orpingtons last year that were 16-weeks or so old and they ended up dressed over 4 pounds, so we know it can be done.
I hope Jean-Martin Fortier is there -- I just got his book and I'm pretty much obsessed with him right now (in a non-creepy way!). I would be thrilled if he was one of the speakers.
So, how much would you feed a flock of 5 hens using FF each day?
Currently we have a feeder with dry feed (local, non-GMO) in the run all the time, and we give them a pan of wet mash of the same feed every morning. If we were to go strictly to the FF and took away the feeder, would we need to...
McMurray Hatchery's website says that Jersey Giants "weeks to maturity" is 20. So is that incorrect?
If I'm being persuaded by you folks (not sayin' that I am ), should I swap out my White Giants for, say, Delawares? I've heard people say good things about the meat yield on Delawares, but...
So many people are concerned that heritage/dual-purpose birds will be "tough", but that really just depends on how you cook it. "Real" chickens (not Cornish X or other industrial hybrid) have better muscles and a different flavor than the 8 week old squishy birds you buy from the grocery store...
Where would you put Brahams in on that scale?
We're going to try getting roosters from Giants, Orpingtons, and Brahamas this year and see if we can't get to 4+ pounds dressed weight by 20 weeks.
I'm considering getting some White Giants to try out as heritage meat birds this year. I've seen a ton of posts/reviews about how they're "slow growers". How slow? What does that mean? By 20 weeks will they be fully grown?
I see a decent number of people who are complaining that they didn't get the same breed that they ordered. When you place the order via their website, there's an option that says that you are okay with them substituting a breed if what you ordered is out of stock. If you check "no", then they...
We raised White Rock roosters for meat this past year and got an average dressed weight of a little under 4 pounds at 17-20 weeks. Wasn't that great, but we're going to play around with feed mixtures and protein treats this year to see if we can get them a little bigger.
Best of luck to you...
We'd like to avoid caponizing. We'll see what happens -- we're naive and adventurous, so perhaps we're being foolish, but that's fine with us. It's a fun adventure, and who knows, maybe we'll find a breed that works for us!
Hmm, I wonder if maybe milk added to their feed would get me the extra 2-4%? I just think it would be gross if the milk spoiled sitting out if they didn't eat it all. I wouldn't want to make them sick -- but maybe they don't care?
