Thank you, Silkie Sue, for responding. Your situation sounds very similar to our own.... and at the very least it makes me feel a bit better knowing other folks have faced such chicken mysteries before.
I would like to know if any of these symptoms sound familiar or if there's something more I could have done to help my hen. Read on for details and please, please share your opinions and knowledge! I have no idea what happened.

1) What type of bird , age and weight...
Thanks! 24 hours later and the chicken is doing much better. She's moving around, eating, and drinking. Still not standing quite as tall or naturally as she did before the shake up.... but I think she's gonna be okay. Heck, I know if I was grabbed and shaken upside down, I'd need a few days to...
Is there any discharge around the eyes or nose?
Isolate her and watch her/the other chickens. There are a few serious chicken respiratory problems that could cause this.... but it could also be just a cold or in response to dust in the air.
I was hoping someone could offer some good words to make me feel a bit better about this morning's misadventure. Right now I'm feeling like a terrible chicken mom.
Our foster puppy grabbed one of silkies this morning and shook her pretty badly. I was able to separate the two fairly quickly...
1) What type of bird , age and weight. --- 11 month old Amber Star.
2) What is the behavior, exactly.---- DEAD. Bottom covered in blood. Not prolapsed. Head covered in blood--- as if she was pecking at herself. Found 1 normal sized egg in the yard covered in blood-- it must be hers. It was on...
We had to cull our 10 month old buff brahma last week. I thought she had a prolapsed vent and was egg bound... but I'm having my doubts because I just found a 2nd hen dead in the yard.
This second one was an 11 month old Amber Star, no previous medical issues. Upon examining her body--- her...
After lots of reading here on the forum, I think my hen has a prolapse (fairly mild) and is egg bound. I've been treating her accordingly. However, there is some white-crumbly accumulation on the lower half of her cloaca that I am concerned about. I don't know if it's dead skin, or urates...

All my hens are about 10 months old and not an egg from them yet.
That's not really the problem, though.
The problem is that my Black Australorp (who is the dominant hen) started ....crowing?!.... this morning.
It's not a real crow. But it's a crow-ish noise.
This is a REAL BIG NONO as...
Thanks for your pointers!
I am thinking the fake flowers or ivy would be best-- it'll require less maintenance, will weigh much less than real flowers and soil, and would not require watering-- which might seep into the coop or nest boxes.
The chickens will not be able to climb into the...
Has anyone done a mock-up window box out of their pop-out nest box?
I know it HAS to be possible. Just wondering if anyone out there has done it, and if they can post pictures before I try and tackle my own....
I'm hoping to do something like this...
20050 + 2 = 20052
We got two brown leghorn hen's last night. We've named them Olive Oil and Florence (Flo for short) in honor of their Italian heritage.
I put a little battery powered LED light in the coop... but have been wondering if it'll do the trick or if I need another kinda light. I'll be watching here for more detailed answers....
Thanks, patandchickens, I appreciate the advice! I think that's what we'll do.... give them a variety of options and see how it goes. Even if they don't end up roosting in the main coop, I'm a fan of the nesting-box-pop-out any way.
We got the girls last night--- two point of lay Brown...
Hey Folks,
I have recently offered to rescue 2 leghorn hens that are being evicted from their city home. I am looking for suggestions as to how to integrate them into my current flock (of 3.5-- one is a feisty bantam) and how to make them comfortable in a space that was previously tailored for...
I am part of the Urban Chicken Underground and live in an area where it is illegal to keep roos. But I'd like some babies next spring/summer.
The thought crossed my mind that I could potentially send my chosen hen on a date with a special roo.
Has anyone else done this?
I'd probably find a...

I've got an BA that exhibits this same behavior-- the neck lengthening, the feathering ruffling, and the chicken-charging. She also flaps her wings at some of the girls sometimes
She's never too mean, though. Just goofy.
If you are having issues with pecking order, I've heard that...
