egg laying and alpha hen stress?

Thanks for the reply. I wouldn't say that she was extremely aggressive, so who knows? I'll enjoy the eggs while they last!

egg laying and alpha hen stress?

We've had our hens for about 6 years and were down to 4. They weren't laying much, which I chalked up to advanced age. This is my first group of chickens, so I really don't know what to expect in terms of when egg laying stops. We're vegetarians, so we've just kept them around as pets and joked...

Trying to figure out why my chicken died

Thanks for the replies. I will read threads on mites and parasites. Not sure what the symptoms are. I have 4 other hens and they look fine to me, but I could be missing something. Thanks again.

Trying to figure out why my chicken died

Sorry this will be a bit long, but want to include any clues that might be relevant. We were away for a week and a pet sitter stayed at our house and took care of our animals. We got home last night and I went to close the coop. It was very stormy, so I didn't open the hen house to check and...

Can extreme heat lead to strange eggs?

Fart egg, hahaha. Very descriptive. I guess I won't worry too much about our strange eggs. The heat is supposed to break tomorrow, so hopefully everyone will be happier.

Can extreme heat lead to strange eggs?

We are in the grip of the mid-Atlantic heat wave w/ 100 or more days for the last week plus. Egg production has gone way down, and I just checked the nests when I locked up the coop and there was a very tiny (grape sized) egg. DH said that he thinks he cracked an egg today that didn't have a...

    Exterminators and chickens

Thank you all for the advice. Our chickens do free range around our 3/4 acre lot, but the indoor ant problem is still bad during certain seasons. I will investigate the orange oil and natural treatments.

    Exterminators and chickens

Hello, not sure where to post this. Hope this is the right place. We have a chronic indoor ant problem which has been brought under control by regular visits from an exterminator. He comes once a month and sprays something outside around the house. I mentioned to the company that we have...

    Bees?

Thanks for the replies. I'll check out the bee thread. I was concerned that the chickens might try to eat the bees, so glad to hear that's not an issue!

    Bees?

I was wondering if any of you BYCers also keep bees. I am sort of contemplating getting some, but wasn't sure how if there were any chicken/bee issues to be concerned about.

    Diet for molting birds

Hello, I've got lots of molty chickens right now and was wondering if I should be supplementing their layer feed with a little extra protein. I was thinking about mixing in a bit of starter feed, but wasn't sure if this was a good idea. Thanks for any advice!

One of my hens spent the night out!

This never happened to me before...night before last, when I went to close the coop door, I noticed that only 4 of 5 girls were roosting. I looked around the yard with my flashlight (it had just gotten dark), but no sign of Iris. I figured she had become a raccoon snack, and was feeling bad...

Okay, that's reassuring. I'll update once I can check it out!

weird thing hanging on my hen

Okay, first let me say sorry no pic here. My EE is so hard to get close to that I can't even get a picture of her, much less hold her and figure out what the odd thing hanging on her side is. I noticed this morning that she seemed to have a small stick stuck in her feathers (on her side below...

    Rhode Island Reds

I have one RIR, who was raised with an SLR. They are best friends and get along fine with the other chickens (one EE, one BO and one BA.) Had to laugh when I read about the EEs in the other replies. Mine cracks me up. She is so high strung and is always clucking and screaming.

Buff Orpington won't leave nesting box?? What could this be?

Quote: Do you have a rooster and/or source of fertile eggs and want baby chicks? If not, and you want your hen to start laying again, follow the advice on the other thread and snap her out of it. Otherwise, I've read (don't know from experience) that she can stay broody a long time. My BO...

How to Break a Broody Hen

Hey there, this is a timely thread for me, as I'm dealing with my first broodie: my usually sweet BO. She's been broody for a few days now and today we finally created a broody pen. We put our extra dog crate inside the run, elevated it on four bricks, and put the broody hen in with some food...
