Hi there,
I recently just picked up three new young hens (two 9 week old and a 5 week old) from a heritage breeder.
I've noticed the two older girls can be quite aggresive, pecking at the other one when there is food involved. Dot, the 5 week old Barred Rock is quite submissive and will let...
Because I don't have too many people who will be as excited as the Husband and I are about our progress, I thought I'd share some photos from our first ever urban hen coop construction with you guys!!
We are a renovating our existing garden shed to house our hens during the night, we've...
Great! Thank you all for your input, I think I will prime and paint the interior of the coop with a latex, low emissions paint and use the orange soap as a cleaner to protect against mites. Chicken Palace here we come ;)
I am in the process of building our chicken coop and I would like to paint the plywood (all in the name of beauty of course) and am wondering if there is a brand of paint that is better for potential pecking than another or if there is a type of paint that is an absolute no go for chicken areas...
@Birdrain92 Could you let us know what you look for when sexing chicks by their wings? We are in the "city" and can not have roosters and most the people in my area who are selling chicks sell them unsexed so I'd like to know as much as I can in trying to determine what they are as best I can...
This might seem like a funny questions, and I know that large hatcheries send chicks out as day olds but is there a period of time that the chicks SHOULD be left with their mommas? I will be acquiring three chicks this summer and it suddenly dawned on me that I don't know the best age to take...
We had a chick once that came to us like that, she would walk in circles sometimes and always at a funny angle when she would try to walk straight. She got special treatment over the other ladies and had a little "palace" set up in the hay barn because the others picked on her. She would lay an...
I am in the South Okanagan, British Columbia Canada. Our winters are fairly mild compared to other parts of the country. I would say through our coldest months (November - January) is an average low of -15 degrees Celsius. Lots of snow and a pretty high wind. The shed that will be converted is...
Thanks Deb for the input. I was definitely thinking solar powered heat lamp to create some kind of situation to stop their water bucket from freezing up. I've seen a few cinder block type platform constructions with a heat lamp inside that obviously heats the cinder block and in turn would stop...
Has anyone had any luck using solar panels to power, heat lamps, lighting, etc in their coop? If so, is their a kit I can buy or a website that has directions? I've never worked with solar before so all of it is very new. The shed we are planning to convert to a hen house doesn't have any...
Hi there,
I'm Erynn and I live in the South Okanagan in British Columbia, Canada. I am in the early stages of planning the introduction of hens to my urban micro homestead. Our municipality just recently changed the bylaws allowing us to have hens so I am very excited.
I have plans to convert...
