Right right. I'm curious though because she hasn't been squatting for me since before she started her molt, but today actually came up to me and squatted (not me chasing her down to see if she would). I guess I'll know anyway in the next few days or so if she's coming out of her molt!
Curiousity question! I'm a pretty new flock owner. One of my SLW was a faithful layer. Around October she stopped and soon after started losing neck feathers and so I assume she has been going through a small molt. She's been looking more feathered lately and today ran up to me and squatted (a...
One of my birds (SLW) has stopped laying, and her sister never started. I figure the weather change and less daylight has something to do with it. We are selling our house so I don't want to get really in depth. Does this string lighting (I tried to go heavy by their window) look like it could...
Just wanted to share it! My husband did NOT want to build our original coop. Then we got two new babies to add to our flock and I decided I wanted a mini-coop (or glorified grow-out pen or separation pen) until they could go in with the big girls. I also decided I didn't want to spend much on...
Lol I'm a couple weeks out from my first egg, and I still find it hard to use them Each one is such an accomplishment! It's getting easier though, and I love that crack of the tough shell and pretty rich yellow of the yolk :) congrats on your eggs!
Yay the squat! I noticed two of my girls doing about two weeks ago, and my RIR started laying this past Saturday, so just over a week after I first noticed the squat. My SLW squatted that same day and nothing from her yet! But my sweet RIR Frances has given me an egg every day but one since she...
Haha that's okay id rather expect it two weeks away and it happen tomorrow than expect it tomorrow and it happen two weeks from now. Nothing yet, though I go out and give them a pep talk every few hours
I'm new too! Lol my analogy is like a pubescent chicken.... Getting ready to be ready but not quite yet. But yes, everywhere I read says the squat is a sign their hormones are changing gearing up for that first egg! So far nothing for me yet! Been about five days since I first noticed the squat :/
I've been kind of checking, so they could have done it sooner, but probably not much. Two of them squatting for me since about three days ago, and now I can't help but check the box three or four times a day
I know it varies but what is your experience from when squatting starts til first egg?
Will be leaving the garage door open during the day for be most part, but I don't have a covered spot outside of the garage that is secure enough I don't think. Night temps no lower than 75 I think, it's so warm here! So far they have seemed okay out there but I will definitely alter if it seems...
Just got two week old chicks. They will be garage kept til old enough to join my flock. We live in Louisiana and in the garage it stays about 88-90 degrees through the day. Will they need a brooder lamp or will that be good for them? Do I need to bring it out at night? It was a whole lot cooler...
Lattice is decorative, there is wire behind it. The wire was the recommended wiring for runs under hardware wish I forget the exact specs. There's a latch on all coop openings, including the nest box. The nest box latch is hook and eye which I know needs replacing but the lid is very heavy so...
Thank you! I love it, just wish I could have afforded a bigger coop... But one day haha. Since this pic, we covered the top with wire (same as sides) as well as shade cloth. So it feels secure. I might try every now and again and just see how I feel about it. Glad I'm not crazy for contemplating...
I've been wondering this. I go out every night and shut their chicken door but the door is accessed in the run, which has so far seemed secure. I left it open last night by accident and the chickens were happily pecking in their run when I got up this morning. What do you
Guys do?
