I don't have a rooster and I pull eggs everyday. her breast feathers do feel thinner. Coach723, you described Liily to a tee! Thanks guys! I have an old wire dog crate i'll try to break her in. good stuff. I feel better about our baby
I have a one year old Buff Orpington that has been in the laying box for about five days. She has laid in these past five days. when I pull her off and put her in the yard she'll scratch around but when the others come around she puffs up and gets defensive. She will not go to roost. She is...
I have two Barnes that will be one year old next week. One laid for about three weeks last fall and just up and quit. The other has never dropped a single egg. My Brahma and Orpington are laying almost everyday. Is there something wrong with my twins or am I being impatient?
Nice Drake woodie. The other is most likely a hen woodie. It's that time of year where they start bunching up in groups. I usually have a couple hundred of them behind my house.

So, I let my chicks out this morning and around 11am they just decided to stay in the coop. Popped the roof open and checked on them and they were all huddled up in a corner looking all scared. It took me a minute to figure it out....hawks...I now have a pesky family of three hawks.
Since mine have been out in the run on a regular basis they've gotten a bigger variety of food. Beeltes, grass, ants, whatever they can scratch up. They got halved grapes last week and went bonkers over them. Like you said, if dirt is ok with momma hen then it's ok with me. Thanks!
Just wondering if sea shells would be the same as oyster shell.I'm at the beach now and just thinking of ways to save an extra buck. Or will the sand they get from my yard be enough for them. They don't seem to have a problem now with mealworms, grass, and birdseed.
