Black Sex-Link Picture Thread!

These chicks were purchased from a local feed store which purchased them from Ideal Poultry in TX which uses a RIR rooster over a barred Plymouth Rock hen. They were sold as black sex link pullets. I haven't raised many black sex links, but I have raised some, and I have looked at every photo I can find. These chicks, probably 10 days old or so, look nothing like anything I can find. Also, one is already beginning to look and act very Rooish, long neck, much larger feet than the other, more pointed facial features, but no yellow spot on its head. I have emailed Ideal, but in the meantime, has anybody had a black sex link pullet that appeared to be barring on the wings at such an early stage? All of my others have been black with gold or red developing later beginning around the neck. In my case, the breed isn't much of an issue, but the sex sure is. Thanks!

The amount of gold/red leakage that a black sexlink pullet will have is highly variable. That's not barring you are seeing, but juvenile partridge-type patterning. It can happen in black sexlink pullets. She will likely be a bit more golden than a typical black sexlink.
If the chick were male, it would have black and white barring like a Barred Rock pullet.

Whew! Thank you so much! I knew the barring should have been black and white and there would have been a yellow spot at hatching, but I'm always nervous about hatchery purchases. Last year, I ended up with 2 BAs from a BSL order, but that was the best mistake ever. Having a slightly different color or pattern will make it nice to be able to distinguish from the rest when they mature. Thanks again!

Our new babies...only wanted one, but can't add one to an existing by itself.
2 Black sex link girls. Will go great with my RIR and Barred Rock girls

Here is my 5 week old, "scraggles". We also bought her from a feed store who gets their chicks from Ideal poultry. They sold her as a Black Australorp. She (hopefully) never had a spot on her head. I am truly hoping she's a she and a BSL. She has blackish/ yellow thick legs, leader of our 6 mixed flock. Her comb has been larger than all my other chicks and now has a very slight pink to it. What do you guys think? The last picture , she is the all black one at about 1 1/2 weeks old. A Sex-link Pullet? Can't wait until she gets into the pretty phase.

Thanks..I have heard that a few times about the spot on the head but had 2 other people say they see a few males in the mix so I'm extremely confused at this point
