    Blood spots & brown spots.

I get quite a few eggs with either blood spots in them or brown spots near the yolk that almost look like dirt has gotten into them. Is this normal? a sign of something? I usually throw them out but I would like to prevent them if it means there is something wrong with my girls. Are they safe to...

    Still waiting.....meanwhile, egg questions!

They will usually be right on top but look around just in case. My girls have always been pretty good about laying in their nesting boxes but twice now I have stepped on an egg buried in the shavings on the floor of the coop. Just be patient, you should get some eggs soon. If you think they are...

Laying eggs from their perch at night?

I get the same thing sometimes and my girls have been laying for a while. Every once in a while I see an egg broken in the poop pile under the perch and once I even found an egg doing an impossible balancing act on the perch itself! I don't know why they do this, but for the most part they will...

How early can you tell if he's going to be a good roo?

That is how mine acts. He is fine when I am facing him but if I turn around he attacks. My friend punted him pretty good last time and he has been well behaved since then but I still don't trust him. He is headed for the stewpot pretty soon (just not mine because I don't have the nerve to do the...

    Mice... Help!

I keep wishing my girls would eat them but they couldn't care less! I have seen the mouse sitting right next to the hens like they were all buddies and everyone was waiting for me to feed them together! The girls (and roosters) don't care about the squirrels either. I wish they would help with...

    Bedding?

Hi Everyone. I was just wondering what you all use for bedding and where. Right now my girls (and boys) have a 7x10' coop that has shavings with perches and nesting boxes and a 10x10' run (soon to be 20x10) that is just dirt. I like having the shavings but the mice like it so much that I am...

    why I come out ahead

Thanks for the tip, I will have to try that. Most of the trees around my house are evergreen or (on my property) have so few leaves that they fly away before the tree is done losing them.

    I need advice! Please??

I have mixed chickens a couple of times now and they all fight for a while (after a period where they can see each other without hurting each other) and then they calm down and pretty much keep to themselves for awhile. You will notice you have 2 groups that hang out separately, the older group...

    Cooling off your chickens??

I hose my girls down. They hate it and run like crazy but they stop panting once it is over. I would rather they be mad at me than die from heatstroke (it gets to about 110 here so I always worry). I have also put frozen water bottles in their coop but they never seemed to notice it.

    Mice... Help!

I have noticed a bunch of holes around my coop lately and I thought it was from the mice but wasn't sure. I will definitely drop some poison in them. That takes care of the issue of keeping it away from my girls. Any more suggestions? They won't go back into the coop to die? I don't want to deal...

    why I come out ahead

I think at this point I am doomed when it comes to making a profit! I have lost so many hens to predators (even when I thought I had them in a predator proof pen something still was reaching through the chain link/ wire mesh & killing them) that I spend most of my time waiting for that first...

    Mice... Help!

So, my wonderful husband built me a great coop and apparantly everyone thinks so since it is now overrun with mice! If I go in at night they scatter and there are at least 20 of them! I was thinking of putting out poison (outside the coop or in something the girls can't get into) but won't that...

    Weak yolks?

I can't seem to crack any of my bantam cochins eggs without breaking the yolk. I don't know if its me or if the yolks are weaker than the other girl's eggs. Her eggs are pretty small and the shell and that inner membrane are pretty tough so I could just be too rough when I am breaking them but I...

    Barely getting any eggs!

Thanks for the info. Its wierd that my cochin seems to be the only one laying now. The weather has been in the 80's to low 90's but here in southern california that is nice & lat year when it was over 100 every day & i was hosing off my girls to keep them cool they were still laying regularly...

    Barely getting any eggs!

Hi Everyone, I have 8 chickens, 5 are rirs who haven't started laying yet (& 2 are roosters anyway) but the other 3 are older chickens who have been laying for a while (1 bo, 1 wyandotte, and 1 cochin). However, a few months ago all 3 went broody and stopped laying. I got them to stop sitting &...

    No one's laying!

It has been pretty hot here (high 80's -90's) so that is probably it. I think one is going broody again, and one may be hiding them because my neighbor lets them out every morning for me so they can run around. They have plenty of shade in their run and their coop is insulated better than most...

    No one's laying!

I have 3 laying hens and I actually had to buy eggs this week! I have gotten 2 eggs this week out of 3 hens. All 3 had been broody and I got them to stop and they started laying again for a few weeks, and now they have stopped again. What is wrong? Is this normal? They all seem perfectly...

do I have a roo or not?

Hi everyone. I recently bought 5 RIR babies who are about a month old now. I noticed the other day that one's comb is quite a bit bigger and already turning redder than the others. Does that mean she is actually a he, or could this chick just be a few days older or maturing more quickly than the...
