I'll have to try the CD trick. We have a LARGE population of bald eagles around here, and they have been checking out my small group of free-ranging Guineas (3) and chickens (3). Last week I saw a group of NINE bald eagles (including at least 3 adults) flying around...
I see in Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens they talk about using artificial light to lengthen the day to keep the hens laying eggs as the days get shorter.
On page 126 of my copy of the book, they also show a table giving the maximum height of the lights above the birds for various wattage...
Yep, still waiting here, too.
I bought one BPR roo and two BPR hens at a livestock sale 10 days ago, and put them in with the 6 adolescent Guinea birds in my coop.
No eggs, yet, but I'm keeping the faith...
Around here, coons are commonly rabid. (I think around 15-20%.) If I killed one, I would probably be sure to either burn it, bury it or make sure it was buried in the landfill. Critters that feed on rabid carrion end up getting rabies themselves.

Within an inch of their life generally works pretty well. They've got to really believe that you will kill them.

Hello, all,
I'm a rank newbie to chickens, and I suspect this has been covered before, but I'm not finding a lot on it.
This past weekend, I bought a beautiful 3-year-old BPR roo and two BPR hens, and added them to my 8' x 10' coop which contained 6 adolescent Guinea fowl that have lived there...
Thanks for the replies. The seller claimed that chickens (or his chicken) would live 7 years or so.
He's real nice rooster. And he was looking slam full up horny with one of the hens he had never met (or that was my perception, and I bet I was right) on the first day.
Do Barred Rock roosters...
OK, I did a search and hunted and pecked around but didn't find an answer...
I just bought my first chickens, two BPR hens and a roo. I want to eventually breed more of them (that's why the rooster, and he was also a beautiful bird, and I couldn't resist) but also plan to eat the eggs (if they...
I bought my first chickens over the weekend, including a beautiful 3-year-old Barred Rock rooster.
I noticed yesterday that he only has one spur. Do spurs get knocked off? Do they ever grow back?

Holy mackerel, I had no idea so many plants were toxic to chickens...it seems like every plant that exists must be on that list!
Question: When I free-range my chickens, do I need to try to pay attention to what they eat, or will they naturally not eat things that are not good for...
Hello, all.
Yesterday I bought three chickens (my first chickens) and put them into the coop with 6 Guinea birds that I bought about 6 weeks ago (also my first) and now I feel like I have some kind of fleas or lice or mites crawling on me. I can't see them but I can sure feel them!
So, I read...
Hey, folks, I'm new here and I've been roaming around the forum and learning a LOT. This looks like a great forum and I appreciate the chance to listen and learn.
About 6 weeks ago I bought (my first) 6 Guinea fowl and I'm just about ready to let them start free-ranging from their coop, but...
