    Are Silkies, Well, Strange?

This is the first time I've had a silkie. I've had chickens for many years. For most breeds, I see little difference in behavior, with most breeds exhibiting basically pretty similar behavior. I find more variety in the indivuals than in the various breeds. But silkies! My girl is 5 months old...

    Silkie -- Blind-like Behavior???

Hello. I have 29 4-month old chickens, and one is a silkie. She is incredible docile, tame, and sweet. But she is also a tad strange. For instance, she's always the last to go in at night. I don't mean by 5-10 minutes either, but by 30-minutes or so. She will just stand outside while everyone...

    Racoons...Climb over wire fence?

We have sold our old property and have purchased new land that we are building on now. I am planning a new chicken area. At our last place, we had a 5' high wire fence that kept the daytime predators out, but each night we would lock the hen's little door, and each morning we would have to go...

Any Show Quality Breeders In Oregon?

I am primarily interested in bantams: blue silkies, OEG in Wheaton, Splash, Black Breasted, and Crele. In standard breeds, I am interested in Lemon Blue Cochin, Am Blue Laced and Red Wyandotte, as well as Golden Laced Orps. I have seramas and would be willing to trade. Brian [email protected]

    Chicks in late Fall???

My 6 month old 1-lb serama hen just started laying eggs. She has made a nest inside the hutch, and her pure white plumage shows signs that the rooster has been on her back. I am assuming that the eggs are fertile, though I'm not sure if a hen can just suddenly become a "woman" with her first...

OEGB / Dutch Bantam ....What breeder should I use???

Is there someone on BYC here who can tell me who the go-to person is for fine (show) quality birds without spending an arm and a leg? Someone with a stellar reputation who treats their birds well and puts their best interests first? I like both breeds and am looking for tame temperament, health...

Bantams: Should I go Dutch, or should I go OEGB (old english game)?

Hell everyone. I have three Seramas on their way, and thought I'd also add Dutch bantams or OEGB. Care to offer your opinion? Here's what I know: Seramas are the smallest of the bantam breeds. They are a superb temperament, though they often lack in in the "looks" department. Next in stature is...

OEG Bantam, vs. Dutch Bantam, vs. Serama Bantam

I would appreciate feedback on these breeds. I would like to raise small--tiny, really--bantams that are quiet, docile, tame, like to be handled and given attention, and can be breed for color. Seramas, I understand meet the requirements and the roosters are not loud, however, they do not breed...

Moulting in dead of Winter...what the???

It is now late January, and half of my flock are recovering from their moult. It makes zero biological sense to me to moult during the worst possible time. All my birds are healthy, uncrowded, free-range, draft-protected, etc. Any guesses?

Hen has diarrhea and no appetite.

This has been going on for around 10 days now. She is 10 months old and she no longer has interest in food. I give my 16 free-range hens two treats (scratch and sunflower seeds) three times a day. They, of course, come running for it. This one hen is last to leave the hen house in the morning...

    She's NOT EATING! Help!

I have 16 hens that free range. For the last three days, one of my hens (the barred rock) hasn't eaten. In addition to pellets inside the hen house, and free ranging all day, I give the girls a morning, afternoon, and evening treat (scratch and black oil sunflower seeds). They all come running...

Dirty Eggs: More lately than before. Bigtime!

I know that we are into Fall, and that the ground isn't as "clean" as in the drier times, still, even on dry days, my hens have been giving me a lot of dirty eggs lately. The nest boxes are clean, so it's not that. Any suggestions??? When I get dirty eggs, I have to wash them, which then means...

    Confused Hens?

I either have a hen that is lesbian, or a rooster. Tell me what you think? My 16 hens (?) are all five and a half months old. I get 10-12 eggs a day at this stage of the game, though some hens haven't started laying yet. So, yesterday I 'm pulling some weeds, and I then , just 10 feet away, I...

    Black Orpingtons....who? where?

I am interested in getting some large black orpingtons. Maybe this year, but most likely next year. Any suggestions where I can find them?

    Funny Sleepers

My chicks are nine weeks old. They've been sleeping in the pine shavings on the floor until recently, in part because of very cold nights and the location of the heat lamp. I just let them stay on the floor at night where they could huddle closely if necessary. This takes extra labor though...
