how do I get a broody hen to leave the nest and stay off it. Our rooster was ran over by a kid on purpose and so I know the eggs are not fertile. She has been on the nest over 3 weeks.
I just received a new hen from a friend, she stayed in the hen house for the first 2-3 days. I went to check on her and I saw where she had busted open the eggs the other hens laid and was eating them. Can this behavior be stopped or do I get rid of the new hen? Thanks
I knew it would happen sooner or later. I prayed for later, much later. I have 15 assorted chickens. My wife HAD one very beautiful flower gard n. HAD!!! I don't want to have to make a choice here, but if I have to chose her or the chickens I think she will write to me eventually, don't you...
The temp was in the low 70's for 3-5 days, no rain. It did freeze 2 nights the day before I came home which actually counts for 3 of the eggs being cracked and had leaked on some of the eggs. I believe 2 of my hens were laying in the nest, if so then the eggs would be 13 days old when I found...
I've been getting 1-2 eggs a day from 8 hens. They just started laying about a month ago. I work away from home 14 days them home for 14 days. I have brush pile in the yard out by the hen house for cover from predators if they need it. I checked there for eggs before I went to work 2 weeks...
I have a bantam hen that started sitting on one of her eggs and four other eggs full size. That was 3+ weeks ago, now she has 15 full size eggs which I know is way to many. Her egg hatched and was killed by the RIR that has been laying in the nest with her. Should I remove all but 6-8 eggs and...
Had coyotes come up last night took 3 of my guineas. When I shut them in at dark there were 5 on the roof of the coop, 2 inside and 3 on the ground. I figured they would get up on the roof like they did the night before so I didn't try to put them in. This morning I went to open the door at dawn...
I'm behind on this thread sorry. Growing up on the farm we had chickens so we always had fresh eggs and chicken for Sunday or get together soon or when ever. We raised chickens to butcher, that was the way it was, never thought twice about going out to the coop when they were all on the roost...
Thank you, I see your avatar is a Bramha, I have 3 Bramahas, 2 roosters and a hen. My one rooster is mounting my pullets I think before they are ready. The reason I think this because they don't squat for him he just jumps on them and coerces them down. Does that sound right.
These are the eggs I've found so far, most had double yolks even though they were so small. I know chickens will get bigger, will the Guinea eggs also get bigger. Thanks.
I have 4 RIR's, 4 Black Marans (I think, could be black beauties) 5 bantams, only 1 pullet bantam, 1 Bramha pullet 2 Bramha roosters, 10 guieneas. All chickens are approx 16 weeks, guineas about 18-19 weeks. Been waiting on eggs forever it seems and today I found 5 small eggs, some with tiny...
For the second night my guineas opted not to roost in the coop, but roost on the coop. We have predators, coons, coyotes, owls, occasional hawk but none for quite a few months. Anyone see any reason to make them go in the roost. Will they go in the roost this winter? Thanks Willie
This will be a multi questions, I'll try to stay on topic. I have 4 RIR's, 3Brahamas, 4 Black Beauties (I think), and 5 banties, 10 guieneas I free range from daylight till dark. I got my flock from the local feed store the last week of May. I have no dog but my neighbor has 6 full blood...
