YES...sorry, I do mean her comb. It has never been bright red like her sister hens. or as large. always kinda greyish red. And has had splotches of black - like I said earlier, never a new pox mark or growth.
She has been separated. Is eating/drinking well, no discolored poo. no runny...
I have a black sex link just over a year old. great layer. has always had a small crop, not very bright, but now seems to seem dirty (always somewhat grey on top), black spots (but not like a pox, just discolored).
Just today, another hen (the alpha) has started pecking at her and it appears...
I think a lot of design considerations depend on your situation. For us, we only have a few hens and we are in a semi-suburban area. Also, we border a state wildlife preserve and have lots of deer, foxes, opossums, raccoons, hawks, etc....
I looked a lots of designs and tried to identify...
Going into the winter, I had 2 layers and the third was holding out due to motling. As the winter solstice approached, both my layers stopped for about 4 days, then resumed about 1 egg every other day (so I got 1-2 eggs a day, and some days none). As January warmed up in our region, I was...
My hens (3) all use the same box. Then one day this winter, the all inexplicably decided to move their laying process to a corner of the coop between the pen door and their food bin. In this corner the scattered all the shavings and layed the eggs on the linoleum floor of the coop. They now...

The Mother - Yes (FYI - for others - basically, the "mother" is the cloudy substance at the bottom of the jar; the residue of the apple, containing more nutrients and enzymes. Other brands are more filtered and clearer).

Backyard chickens are still illegal in New Castle County -- for now.
County Council voted 10-3 on Tuesday against a law that would allow keeping as many as six chickens on residential lots of a half-acre to one acre. Council wants to keep intact the county's...

EVeryone in Delaware should be involved in this issue...I live nearby in PA and was born and raised and still work in DE.
The issues (since the article is no longer posted) is that a woman in the suburb of Hockessin (that's ho KESS in) was raising chickens in her suburban yard for a few years...
I like the terra cotta pot/bulb idea, and am considering modifications to my coop. Thanks.
Regarding the bulbs - I know that the old style fluorescent bulbs are charged gas (giving it that trinkling noise as the light flickers on) and need a steady electric stream. That is why those types of...
