    Chickens and compost

I've been adding used coffee grounds to my compost bin because my plants love them, but should I be giving access to them in the chicken compost?

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

I'm still trying to find out the best setting for my girls who are now 12 days old. Does it make sense to turn it down during the hot day temps (96+) and up overnight (65+)? Last night I left it on 3.

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

I turned down to 3 this morning, and when I walked in just now, every one of the chicks were on top of the brooder! Thanks!

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

The chicks are now 11 days old. Temps are in the mid to high 90's during the day and upper 60's overnight. I've been keeping MHP turned on all the time (currently at 4). There is poop on the top towel so at least one chick has been up there at some point. Last night, I didn't get out to the...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

They have chick grit available at all times and their coop has a sand floor. Is this sufficient?

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Not a heating pad report but I did give the girls 20 live crickets that I bought at Petsmart today. They loved them! I want to fed them live prey as much as possible so they learn to hunt once they get the courage to master the steps I built into the pop door ramp. I've been bribing them with...

    FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

I make my own water kefir and am wondering if anyone has given the water kefir grain to their chicken? I feed them to my dogs for added gut support.

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Yes...the beauty of this shelf is that each shelf is easy to move. As soon as the girls can fly up, I plan to enclose the second shelf. Just too many other priorities at the moment.

You know you love your chickens when...

I have no clue what they are, except the two with hair on their feet (light brahmas) and the one without hair on the neck (Turken)...brown egg assortment from McMurry Hatchery. ;-)

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Okay, will do. Thanks for the suggestions, being that I really am a new egg when it comes to raising chickens...;-). Gotta say that I LOVE the heating pad over the heat lamp, and am VERY appreciative for all the great input in this very long thread. I read pages 1-120!

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Mainly because it is hot here and the temp inside the coop is 95 degrees during the day...should I leave it on anyway?

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Tonight (the second night using the Mama Heating Pad): around 7:30 pm a big thunder/lightening/rain storm came through and the chicks were nervously squeezing themselves between the feeders and the wall of the coop, chirping loudly. I turned on the heating pad, picked up each one and put them in...

Thank you @lazy gardener! I'm still a sponge!

    FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

I don't know if this has been addressed already, but what feeder do you folks use to serve up the FF? My 16 chicks are 9 days old today and I'm using a galvanized mason jar feeder (quart-sized) for their starter crumbles. It seems to me that the mash/mush? would be hard to clean out of those...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

I opened coop pop door for the first time (8 days old), now that I have a day off to monitor them. Also, while I was working in the coop hanging up tools and what-not, I had the bril idea to make the bottom "shelf" under the brooder the new MHP area. Further away from the pop door, closer to...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Here is my installation: Mama Heating Pad: installed on 7/18. Put in coop at 3:00 pm, no chicks interested in being underneath (94 degrees in coop). Waited until after dark when temps were hovering around 80 degrees in coop at 9:00 pm, and when I went into the coop, two clump of chickens...
