    Christmas Hatch-A-Long

Our hatches are officially complete. Our 4 little Silkies I posted about yesterday are doing great. Running around, jumping on mama, all the normal things littles do. Our 3 Orpington eggs all hatched! And they're doing great. Mama Raven is doing a fantastic job for a first timer. All the chicks...

    Christmas Hatch-A-Long

Our hatch that's due today or tomorrow had two chicks hatch yesterday morning, one over night and one zipped just before dark today. Had one egg I already know of die a week ago and I could make out movement in our last egg this morning so it may not hatch. 2 were Silkies and I our them with our...

    Christmas Hatch-A-Long

One of ours hatched 4 days late. I think it was because the week before due date we had night temps in the teens and day temps in the upper 20s. We got 3 out of 9 hatch but one died because it couldn't back under mama and got chilled.

    Christmas Hatch-A-Long

Just a possible suggestion. Warm bricks or rocks on the wood stove or in the BBQ grill. Wrap in a towel and place on top.

    Mid December Hatch-A-Long!

Went out to check them again yesterday morning, nothing. One more time about 4pm and found a very wet, newly hatched little chick! I got a feeling that the cold we had last week (low 20s and some teens) slowed the hatch a little. They're now on day 23. Checking again a little later this morning...

    Mid December Hatch-A-Long!

Our hatch started sometime this morning. I found our first Silkie chick a few minutes ago when I checked on them. Wil check again later but meanwhile both mamas are continuing to sit on the nest together.

    Mid December Hatch-A-Long!

Went down with my wife tonight to check the eggs. Wanted to be quick because it's cold, there's two hens on the nest and we didn't want to disturb the eggs because they're so close to hatching. I was able to lift one of their wings and my wife saw a dark chick almost out of the egg. We left...

    Mid December Hatch-A-Long!

I still have another day or two to wait. Since they're being hatched by a mama hen the pics will be after they're hatched, plus I'm on crutches but you can bet I'll be down at the coop when my wife tells me they're here!

    Christmas Hatch-A-Long

Did you know that you can buy multimeters (voltmeters) from places like Sears or Lowes and they come with a thermocouple lead that can read temps? They're actually pretty accurate, I've checked mine against calibrated ones at work and it was almost right on.

    Mid December Hatch-A-Long!

Can I join? I just found this thread and I have a hatch of Silkies due this Saturday, the 16th. Candled several last night and they looked good so I'm hoping for a pretty successful batch. Was hoping to see some pictures of the chicks already hatched. Anyone???

    Christmas Hatch-A-Long

I didn't about these HALs but I'm nearly on schedule with Christmas. I had three hens go broody so I've place eggs. I have two Silkies that went broody days apart and wanted to share a nest so they're hatching eggs together that are due this Saturday, the 16th. I also had an Orpington hen go...

    Ameraucana Sounds Different

Not sure of her age. Old enough to lay though. She laid egg the day after I got her but none since, I suspect that's due to the environment change of being in quarantine.

    Ameraucana Sounds Different

That's kinda what she sounds like, an old chain smoker. Was listening again tonight and she almost sounds like a goose going bawk, bawk. Definitely very different. TY

    Ameraucana Sounds Different

I just received a possible Ameraucana hen, at least she looks like one. She's in quarantine and seems fine but she sounds....ummm, different. Her cluck is sort of harsh, coarse or rough maybe, its hard to describe. I know different breeds can sound different even while making the same "sounds"...

    Post some Autumn photos!

Thank you. It took us awhile to get the type of roo we wanted and a color we liked. We want to raise a limited number of them just for fun. We hatched some Orpingtons earlier this year and we loved it and want to do it again with them and our Silkies.

    Post some Autumn photos!

Now that we've got a nice Silkie Roo we want to hatch some of our own. It may be a little late this year so we'll just have to watch the long range forcasts.

    Automatic pop door closers?

I agree, never had a problem with mine (using one on each coop) and saves the worry about being away overnight. Mine has the photo sensor and closes up a little later than I thought it should but I got used to it and like it now because I've never had anyone caught outside. It has the 2nd...
