My hen started doing this a couple days ago. I noticed she started doing it after a rainstorm that lasted a few days (fairly unusual for this area). She makes this sound ALL DAY and ramps up to get louder and louder. This is my first time owning silkies. Is that normal?
I have an almost 4 year old coturnix quail (female). She in an indoor quail and has always been the healthiest of the flock. I noticed that she was dragging her body around her coop early yesterday morning. When I further investigated, I found that one of her legs wasn’t moving. She has been...
My buttons were kept in pairs too and they were big cuddles! I tried to introduce one new button to the pair and that was a nightmare. I’ve never had male buttons, so I’m not sure what their behavior is like.
I have one Japanese quail who lets me handle her regularly. The rest would rather not...
I’ve had both button and coturnix. Both smell! A pair of the buttons were grosser and smellier than the coturnix. I live in Hawaii and I keep my quails indoors in decent sized runs.
Here is my breakdown based on my experience with them.
Buttons:
-skittish / hard to handle
-tiny eggs
-good...
My coturnix quail has a developed a red, scaly rash on her belly and feathers appear to be missing. I don’t know how long she’s had this. No major changes in behavior except she no longer jumps on top of her sandbox (her favorite). She still dusts in her sandbox, but not as much as before. She...
I had two Chinese button quail together, but one recently passed. The remaining quail won’t stop calling for her friend. I have Japanese quail, but I’m hesitant to add the Chinese button quail to the mix. Any ideas on how to get her to stop calling/crying? I don’t want to get another bird.
Found this in my female jumbo coturnix’s cage. She’s in there alone at the moment. She seems fine and is a normal egg laying girl.
Is this backed up eggs or something?
I use that too! 2 of my buttons go crazy in it and sand gets everywhere. My other 2 build nests with hay in the "orb" (what I like to call it). I have to use boxes for my coturnix since they are much bigger.
I ended up having to put 1 male and 1 female together (the other female died). The male won't leave the female alone. A lot of her feathers are missing as a result of him constantly trying to mate with her. I tried to introduce another female into the group, but they weren't having it. The...
The opposite happened to me. My white coturnix's cagemate suddenly died and she would cry constantly. She ended up taking a liking to 2 of the female buttons that I have.
My buttons are very social with each other. Always together. Get your button a friend!
I hope it works out for you! Keep...
My female buttons didn't give eggs until about a month after settling in. I increased their grit, gave them more places to hide, padded the top of their cage (they would fly up), and then kind of left them alone. Since then, they give eggs daily and make the best nests!
I have 2 buttons that pretty much have no feathers on their heads because they kept flying up in their cage at night. Their feathers haven't grown back, but they are healthy. I cleaned their heads with a poulty wound spray.
I also have a jumbo female who kept getting attacked by a smaller male...
