I really like your coop. Great job. If you can have a Rooster you will have as much fun hatching out your own.

    Babies just hatched!

Good deal. I'm doing the same thing. I'm keeping everything in house. By that I mean Rooster, hens, chicks all come by the natural way. I've bought fertilized eggs and baby chicks for the last time. From what I have been reading a lot of people are starting to do the same thing. Good luck. frankoo

BROODER thread! Post pics of your brooders!

2'x10' rolled aluminum insulation works great. Stands up on it's own. Start out with ends taped together and then enlarge as peeps get bigger. Cost $9:00 at Home Depot. Just add the usual items and you have a brooder. Easy to clean and roll up when they go to the pen and save for next time. Franko

Introducing day old chicks to mother hen with two week old chick

Picture of Mother hen and her fifteen day old chick she hatched. (I got the eggs off Ebay and they are Lavender Orpingtons) The new rejected chick is now with the other thirteen and doing fine. After a day and half next to the others she fit right in this morning. Boy, I wish I had a film of the...

Introducing day old chicks to mother hen with two week old chick

Well, the new chicks arrived this morning. One chick was pecked on pretty bad, so I choose this one to put in with the Mother hen and her baby chick. She was stilling keeping the baby chick warm so I slipped the new one under her. All it took was about two...

Introducing day old chicks to mother hen with two week old chick

I did a little experiment this afternoon. I put five eggs, my other hens laid, under the momma hen and she went over and has been sitting on them for the last hour. I am going to play this by ear and take one step at a time. If she is still broody by Wed, I may try and introduce four or five...

Introducing day old chicks to mother hen with two week old chick

Momma hen is so protective of her own chick, I don't want to take a chance on losing any new ones, so, I think it's the brooder. Wish I could have received chicks sooner and it might have worked. Thanks for advise.

Introducing day old chicks to mother hen with two week old chick

I could put the two week old chick in my brooder and try putting the day olds under her. I don't really want to mess with mother nature though.

    Breast skin torn by Fox

I've raised chickens for twenty years but never had this happen. I have been missing a hen about every two weeks for the last two months. I found out yesterday what it was. The fox had killed one hen and had another in his mouth but when I came out the fox dropped her and ran. There are a few...

    Bear proof chicken tractor ideas?

I would think 2" pipe corner post in cement and re-bar welded in sixteen inch widths around you pen and coop and on top, with 11/2 " pipe every four feet as stays. Make a re-bar gate. Not sue if that's prohibitive for you or not. Then add electric wire. Geez, I just realized you'd have a...
