So is this behavior symbolic of pending first eggs? I caught these two digging these holes just now.. they looked at me like they just got caught.. they are about 4.5 months old
So i've read alot about putting sand in the coop and i think i'm going that route. Those of you that do it can you suggest a good type of sand to use? and it does not rain a whole lot in San Diego but it is this time of year. We are going to get about 2 inches starting tomorrow. If i had sand...
So i posted a little while back on keeping the pullets out of the nest box and i think i have an idea i wanted to run past the experts.. i can remove the floor or the nest box and that would solve the problem... issue is there is a big hole in the floor of the roost.. pics attached of both...
oh thats a good tip! i was going to cut a board and keep them out but that should work.. dang 6-9 months! oh well they are a blast so we'll keep waiting!
yes i have noticed they are starting to cluck around a little bit, its like they are just getting their voices. they do tend to sleep where the nest would be so from what i'm reading on other threads i need to break them of that habit..
So i'm the noobie, and i'm doing pretty good i think. i have 2 lovely marans hens that are about 2 1/2 months old. question is when they start getting in the egg laying mood in a few more months what do i do about the nest area? put some straw in there and let them put a nest together? and will...
So i am a bit of a newbie and a big Craig'slist deal maker. I bought a brand new coop from a guy and assembled it and have found out that its not made from the best quality wood. I live in San Diego and we just had abut 3 days of rain and the coop got wet and now its starting to warp and...
so the farm the last one went to had a marans that was full grown, they really don't know the age because its more or a farm animal rescue thing, but they say she's a good layer. Whats the rules on if i take rooster #2 over there and adopt her? will she fit in with her two younger sisters? they...
What a let down! %50 of my chickens turn out to be roosters! is that just my luck or does that happen? here is a pic of the first one, that was a no brainer, he was a little aggressive.. this one isn't though..
So i originally bout 4 chicks from a local feed store and they said that they are sexed to about %80 to be hens. Well i already had to send one to a farm because it was a for sure rooster. Now i think i might have another but i cant tell for certain. looking at full grown maran hens i can see...
First night was good! I came down this morning and they were all huddled in the coop ready for breakfast. It rained for a few hours while I was at work so I had to worry about them all over but they seemed just fine when I got home. Changed out the wet pine shavings and all is well again!
They are about 7 weeks old, fully featured, I trained them pretty good to go up in the roost so they took right to that! They are in there now all hurled up. Coop is pretty good, not that drafty.
Hello everyone! My first post! It's a big night for me, my three little hens will spend their first night outside.. I must say I'm a little nervous for them but from what I've read they are pretty resilient little gals! I live in San Diego so not that worried about cold temp.. think the low is...
