Advice needed - soft eggshell adhered to cloaca

Thanks! I am glad it worked out. Incidentally, this turkey is "Lucille," as in, "one tough red-head." This poor bird has survived more trauma than any we've ever owned (and we've owned a lot).

Advice needed - soft eggshell adhered to cloaca

Success I kept at it with the massage and the oil, and was finally able to remove the egg mass. The cloacal tissue is quite inflamed, but the bird seems clearly relieved and we will continue to watch her until her laying returns to normal.

    Need advice for injured turkey

Thanks for asking. I ended up hauling her into a vet (the only one I could find that would consider laying eyes on a turkey). She shared my suspicion of an infection, but couldn't pinpoint anything. She also couldn't rule out a microfracture from whatever caused the initial injury. She...

Advice needed - soft eggshell adhered to cloaca

I have a 2 yr Bourbon Red turkey who is has been laying soft shelled eggs (we have since added calcium to her diet), but her immediate problem is that one of the eggs was not fully excreted. The limp eggshell became lodged in her cloaca, where is has adhered to the soft tissue (it is quite the...

    Need advice for injured turkey

I have a 10 m/o Narragansett/Bronze cross hen that has injured her leg. It appears as if she lacerated it in several places about two weeks ago, although it was not immediately apparent. When she began limping a week ago I examined her and discovered the partially healed cuts. There now seems...

Crushed chick - What do I do???

Thanks for the advice. I considered that, but my daughter was very upset and wants to bury the chick intact. I stumbled across the instructions for a euthanasia chamber and was able to throw one together quickly. It worked, but I still have one upset little girl. Wish me luck on that end.

Crushed chick - What do I do???

I need immediate advice. My five year old tripped while picking up a chick and partially crushed her. Her internal organs are protruding, so I know she's not going to make it. How do I "take care" of her as quickly and as painlessly as possible (for everyone's sake).

Late Hatch - What's going on?

Update: I have to very active chicks and a third egg is pipping (although with less vigor than the first two). I have to leave to go out of town (talk about terrible timing!) and am leaving the eggs in the care of a chicken-loving friend. Fingers crossed for more babies, although I am...

Late Hatch - What's going on?

Thanks. I still only have one that has hatched, and that was 6 hours ago. (He is a cutie!) He is climbing all over the other eggs and really knocking them around. Should I do something to keep them still or just let them be?

Late Hatch - What's going on?

We've got a chick! He/she looks great and is already strutting his stuff all around the bator.

You'd think I'd be used to this by now! Update! One is out!!!

Amazingly enough I just saw the first pip about 15 minutes ago. Like I said, this is Day 22 for us - or Day 23, depending how you count. I started the eggs late in the evening of June 30. I am so relieved to finally see something! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for your little guys.

You'd think I'd be used to this by now! Update! One is out!!!

I'm right with you. I am into Day 22 right now, with only one egg peeping. The 10 others are totally quiet. This is my first hatch, though, so I have nothing to compare it to.

Late Hatch - What's going on?

Still no chicks. There is still occasional peeping and egg movement, but nobody is breaking through.

Late Hatch - What's going on?

Peeping!!! I was just about to turn the computer off and go to bed when I suddenly heard peeping. And loud! No visible pips yet, but I just breathed a sigh of relief.

Late Hatch - What's going on?

Quote: Yes, I did. That's what my local chicken guru said to do. But that one day would obviously make a difference in my count.

Late Hatch - What's going on?

Ooh, good idea. I didn't think about the milk thermometer. I have one for cheesemaking, but it didn't occur to me to use it for the eggs. I will get a dedicated one for the next hatch.

Late Hatch - What's going on?

Quote: It's a digital model that monitors temp and humidity. I checked it against the conventional therm that came with the incubator and they were about 1 deg apart, but I couldn't say which one was correct. Eggs are still moving - maybe more than before - so I'm probably just a nervous new...

Late Hatch - What's going on?

Thanks. Count is definitely right - I wrote it on the calendar and have counted and recounted. But hey, if the chicks say I'm wrong, I'm okay with that. I just hope I don't go cross-eyed staring through the little window waiting for something to happen!

Late Hatch - What's going on?

This is my first attempt at incubating eggs, and I currently have 11 in the incubator. I am at the end of day 22, with no sign of pips. I do, however, see the eggs periodically rocking back and forth, as if there is movement inside. Development looked good during candling up to day 18. Temp...
