CHOPPED GARLIC ADDED TO FEED - BEST CURE FOR MITES/LICE

Out of our 20 hens we had 1 that we had been calling “Bald Chicken”. Her underbelly was un feathered, as were her head, tops/shoulder part of her wings, and front of neck, and all exposed areas were beat red and raw looking. Only 2 of the other 19 hens showed some signs of baldness on heads...

    Peahen with Head Injury

She is pooping more normally today from yesterday’s berry, grape, chicken food, sunflower seed mash up…even though she only got a little into her.

    Peahen with Head Injury

Thank you for this detailed reply. She doesn’t seem to be experiencing any pain at this point, but we’ll try to get a tube into her. Been trying to look at videos as tube feeding is something we’ve never done and don’t want to insert it wrongly.

    Peahen with Head Injury

Our older peahen, that adopted us 3 yrs ago, flew into Glass door in garage. Sat stunned, and bloody headed with 2 swollen shut eyes for 3 days. Did not eat nor drink for 3 days. On day 3 we washed her face, gently getting dried blood and puss away from eyes. Left eye was fine, right eye...

    Obese Hen

Hi All, I have 8 laying hens and 11 more pullers...One of my two Silver Laced Wyandotte’s has become large. Her feet are wide apart under her heavily sagging abdomen, her back is wide, and her neck thick looking, and even throw she can free range over vast acreage, she sits or waddles - she...

    Baby chick not growing

I see the previous posts are a bit dated. My chicks, that I got as 1 day olds from the local feed store, are now 5 weeks old; 5 Ameracaunas, 4 Black Sex Links, and 3 Ply. Bard Rocks. 1 of the Bard Rocks is very small - about 1/3 less in size than all the others. She is feathering decently...

New Coop for up to 20 Hens

We repurposed windows from an old Dutchman travel trailer that we stripped down to a flatbed trailer. Utilized space within the fenced chicken run area, and designed this chicken condominium. 6 nice laying boxes, a large roost that we hope will hold up to 20 hens, and a bit of room when they...

High 30s and dark at night?

I have 4 Silver Laced Wyndottes and 4 Buff Orpingtons in my 5' diameter master bathtub. They are fluffing/dusting in the pine shavings and coating my entire bathroom with silty dust daily, causing a ruckus sometimes clanking feeder and waterer around and these girlies don't smell like roses...

Topic of the week - Dustbathing

I filled a large plastic bowl with dirt and a bit of wood ash for my 2 week old chicks, that are now 4 weeks old. I stay away from chemicals or additives. I have a 5 ft diameter HW stock tank as a master bathtub, so my 6 chicks are currently in the tub in the bathroom. As the chicks have...

Topic of the Week - What do you do with all those eggs?

Since our neighbors helped us get eight 1 year old BRs, and use their flatbed trailer to go pick up the already built coop and fencing we feel we owe them, so we give extras to them for now. We are grateful. But we also operate our house as a B and B so come summer travel season we'll use up...

Hen picking out her own feathers

I'm having this problem with a 1 week old baby Austria chick. The others in my brooder are totally fine. I've tried putting on Peck No More, giving dried meal worms to increase protein. I feed Manna Pro Organic Chick Starter. I just can't figure this out and she looks terrible.

Help! Week Old Chick Pecking Itself!

Thank you. I'll look for the Peck No More product; and yes there is plenty of cooler space in brooder and so far the injured one is staying under the Brinsea to stay warm. I'm trying to interfere minimally so as not to add more stress to any of them.

Help! Week Old Chick Pecking Itself!

Hi All, I don't know if this little one will be around by a.m. She's pecking above and below a wing to the point that all her little fuzz is gone and other chicks occasionally join in. He side is raw. I've put blue dyed Polysporin on it to no avail. I have 6 chicks in a 3' diameter area...

Do you add vitamins/electolytes to the baby chicks water?

I had the same question about adding supplement(s) to chick water. I picked up small packets of electrolytes, but once I got home and read the label more closely and looked a the list of ingredients, I decided against using any as it does say to have a fresh water source available in addition...

Putting New-to-Me Yearling Hens with Young Ones

Thank you. I read up on biosecurity. The woman giving the hens away said I could come and inspect her flock/coop. I'll look for signs such as discharge from eyes, beak/nose etc. I'll read up more. In terms of space for them all to spread out and escape bullies, I've divided my run into two...

Putting New-to-Me Yearling Hens with Young Ones

I planned on picking up a dozen or some mixed layer hatchlings, Bardrocks, Buff Orgs, Austrias, and Americaunas in a couple of weeks then putting them in the coop/run - brand new- around the first of June. I just got a call from a local woman who said she's moving and has 8 yearling layers -...
