That's amazing! Two of my girls are ready but the other four aren't quite there yet. My daughter is stalking the coop this morning to see if anyone lays. LOL
I agree. It's totally up to the flock. I'm going to pick up a small bag of pellets today and mix it with their starter to switch them gradually and to see what they do with the pellets. If they like them, we'll go with the pellets.
Two of my girls have been showing signs that they would be laying soon. This afternoon I was standing in the kitchen window and heard this crazy noise coming from the coop. It was not a noise I had heard before. At first I was alarmed and then I wondered. But no, it's too soon isn't it? Then I...
Yes! It was like, "OMG! We did it!" We took these sweet little fluffy chicks, we didn't know what the heck we were doing (well, we didn't anyway) and after weeks of research and education and caring for these sweet girls, we have eggs!
Hooray! Congratulations! We had got our first egg today and it is so exciting. It was ridiculous. We were dancing and squealing and calling everyone like we had just had a baby! Enjoy!
Yes, there are two windows that open and close. One is on the back and not visible in the image I posted. One is on the side above my daughter's head in the image. Those windows are always open unless it is storming or if it's going to be a chilly night. The front of the coop, where the door and...
Good morning! I come to you with a question this morning regarding bedtime. A few facts first. I have three Barred Rocks and three Tetra Browns who are about six weeks old. My chicks are free range when we are out in the yard or confined when we are gone or can't keep a watchful eye on them. I'm...
Ah I remember the first night in the coop. You have gotten great advice so I have nothing to add really except to reassure you that it does get better. That first night they clung to us and oh how they cried. I rocked and soothed my Henrietta like an infant, trying to calm her that night. My...
Did we all survive the rain?! The first week that my girls are in the coop full time and it pours buckets for two days! I was a nervous wreck. We seem to have made it unscathed. The coop did ok. It seems everything stayed dry for the most part. I had some wet straw in the nesting boxes but...
I use about three inches of a soft, short cut straw in the nesting boxes and then pine shavings on the pull out poop tray under the roosts. In the run I'll be using the deep litter method. I bought Backyard Chickens for Dummies and I have found it very useful. It's always open on my desk. I also...
UGH. We raked and burned that pile. The kids would have loved being able to just throw those in the coop! We'll keep that little secret between us or I might have a mutiny on my hands. LOL I'm pretty sure I can get my hands on some more though. We have tons of trees. I clean off their poop tray...
I've noticed this. Until last night, they've been out there during the day. I popped my head in yesterday to give them an apple and noticed it was not smelling too fresh. This is our coop set up. Would the DLM work in this run?
Hello everyone! I'm just finding this thread so it looks like I have 183 pages to catch up on!
This is year will be my first raising chickens. We purchased our chicks at the end of March from our local TSC. We have three Barred Rocks and three Tetra Browns. They are a month old now and spent...
I've been following this thread. Thank you for posting this question! My girls just went out into the coop full time yesterday. It is a pre-made kit we bought from TSC. It's not great but it will be a good starter. The run and coop are all enclosed together and I was wondering what people were...
