Dark Comb (blueish purple) UPDATE & PICS

Anyone? Come on BYC I know you have it in you! Oh and I think this chk maybe was the one who was broody- after two weeks or so of refusing to budge or eat and basically starving her self she suddenly left her nest in the goat barn and now isn't broody. I'm not positive in anyway that they...

Dark Comb (blueish purple) UPDATE & PICS

Some photos from this morning. I also noticed her eyes are usually half shut and tail feathers are usually down. She an walk fine but prefers not to and doesn't really run away/ is slow. I caught her and felt her abdomen- it is very warm/hot, large and soft almost squishy. I caught another for...

Dark Comb (blueish purple) UPDATE & PICS

One of my hens has a bluish purple-ish comb. It started at just the tips an has gotten darker and now almost all of the comb is this dark color. I read that the comb discoloration is a sign of the birds air/heart function.... She doesn't sound sick. The past day or two she does look worse and is...

    broody hen- droppings ?

i've got a broody hen that has dark green diarrhea-ish droppings with more solid bits in it that are white and kinda grainy - is this normal? Shes buried herself in our goats hay manger so i'm not sure how often she gets out - today was the first time i've seen her out and i think she's been...

Size of run for 50 chickens?

so 50 at 10 sq ft would be 500 sq ft or a 20x25 area-definitely sounds small for a full time enclosure. at 80sq ft it would be 4000sq ft or about 63x63 and closing that in.....wow might as well fence our 5 acres hmm how likely is it they'd learn it's safer to stay inside the fenced in area...

    Permethrin 10%

In case someone is looking for info I thought I'd update- dipping them worked great and seems to have killed the eggs too. We've checked several times and all's clear!

Size of run for 50 chickens?

How big should an enclosure be for 50 chickens (plus a few Roos) full-time use? We currently have 24 layers and two roosters that are free ranged. They "generally" stay in the fenced in area for our goats but as it's warming up they are jumping the 4 ft. fence. We had issues with a neighborhood...

New chicks dying one by one

glad to hear the losses have stopped. we had a bad shipment too and lost a bunch too just as you described but worse even. now we buy from the local feed store. chickens & people generally don't swap germs- sure there are a few diseases out there but people don't give chickens colds. they'd be...

    considering ducks..?s

i'm considering adding ducks to the homestead....I hear great things about Mascovies ......I'm wondering tho about how they'd do in winter in eastern maine (without a heater)? i've been told they'd help with the slug & mosquito problem, like the small creek we have, get along with chickens &...

    Dogs

i second ranchhand.... once a dog has a taste of chicken it WILL be back. Be aware tho that in most places now shooting a dog is animal cruelty and can come with a heavy penalty....You should contact your local warden. they can figure out whose dog it is and get you compensation. plus the person...

    Still not laying

hmm. It's just so odd. All the others have started- even the younger ones and these pearl white leghorns were suppose to be the first to start laying. I'm just glad they're still with us after all they've been through. I know stress and stop a chicken from laying and they certainly have had...

    Permethrin 10%

Thanks. I've come across several non official things saying it would be ok. If anyone knows of an official yes or no I'd appreciate it. You'd think there would be something out there ya know?! I also read that with the liquid stuff you don't always need a second application as it can kill the...

    Still not laying

I have a couple chickens I got back at the end of last spring/start of summer and they still haven't started laying. 2 I know are pearl white leghorn. They did have a really rough start. We got 25 from McMurray and only 6 made it- most where dead on arrival/several died within the hour. They...

    Permethrin 10%

After treatment with Permethrin 10% is it ok to eat the eggs? is there any sort of withholding time? I've searched and searched but can only come up with withholding time for pigs and cattle. I finally had to treat my chickens with Permethrin 10% (diluted and "dunked" them in) after a long...
