Yolks that won't whisk together for scramble and are firmer than the normal yolk

That's not old. My girls started laying again a couple of weeks ago and before that I was using eggs from November with no issues. But I had a few older ones where the yolks had thickened---no indication of spoilage, only noticeable thicker yolks and thinner whites.

    What to plant

Mine go crazy for nasturtium leaves. I plant three 24" pots next to their run---eight seeds to each pot. Very easy to grow. Pretty too. Be sure to get the shorter ones, not the vining ones. I like the Burpee Jewel Mix---orange, yellow, red.

Yolks that won't whisk together for scramble and are firmer than the normal yolk

How old were the eggs? Sometimes the yolks in older eggs get very thick and congealed.

    Best Coop Cleaner?

Seriously now. Going on two years with my girls. For everyday (and I DO clean poop every day) I use a white vinegar spray, full strength. Spray and scrub with paper towels. It melts the poop away. For seasonal cleaning (Spring and Fall) I scrub out with a weak detergent solution and rinse with...

Keeping water from freezing in the winter

From the outlet on my deck to where I would put the heated bowl is about 125 feet (measured with Google Earth). I will need to use a few extension cords, with cord connection covers as @Kasilofchrisn mentioned. Getting an order together for Chewy.com---the bowl is only $13.77 now.

Would extension cords be an option?

    Securing chickens during treatment

Yep, that was my issue. DH was having a helluva time holding onto some of the more rambunctious girls. With the swaddler I can grab one of them myself and not have to deal with telling anyone else what to do, lol. Just toss the swaddler over a hen, lift them up and secure the velcro. One and...

    Securing chickens during treatment

There are many helpful threads here on how to treat bumblefoot. Basically, I stood them in a basin full of warm water and epsom salts for at least twenty minutes. Then I dug out the bumblefoot with an exacto knife and tweezers---if you are lucky you will be able to grab a big yellow...

    Raccoons here

Aww...I was just hoping to give the poor thing a peaceful death. He is only following his natural instincts. They conflict with ours, to be sure. And damn, this would happen in my enclosed garage. I am on three acres...no one would see! BTW, if I have to, this is how I would let my girls go...

    Raccoons here

Yep, my bears are extremely lazy. Suet feeders---well sure, if they open easy. Bird feeders? Well, only if we can bend the hangers easily enough and then only if the feeders open up when they fall. From the looks of the bear prints, he wandered towards the coop and then turned around when the...

    Securing chickens during treatment

I know we all are familiar with the "wrap them in a towel" routine when we have to treat our birds or clip their nails or whatever. Yep, the towel thing works great unless you have a tremendously flappy bird that is determined to get out from under that towel come hell or high water. During an...

vent fleet with prolapse--AFTER vet visit

I have had only one experience with prolapse. My biggest girl, a GW, presented with her vent hanging out. After much research, I soaked her in an Epsom salts bath for about twenty minutes. BTW---Preparation H is no longer recommended. As a nurse I questioned the Prep H approach---this would...

    Dirty bums

I too think trimming and spot-cleaning is the way to go. I would think of doing a full-on bath on a chicken only if something catastrophic had happened (skunk attack?) or I was going to show her. Since my girls are just plain ol' laying hens and will never see a show ring a spritz and scrub and...

    Dirty bums

The one good thing about the annual molt is that the yucky feathers are replaced by nice new ones. Several of my girls now have nice fluffy bum bum feathers. The others....not so much. When I can't stand the crappy bums anymore I have a procedure. I get a spray bottle and fill it with warm water...

    Raccoons here

If you have the raccoon in a trap you can enclose that trap in a plastic bag or tarp and attach the whole thing to a tailpipe. CO poisoning is a relatively peaceful way to go, certainly as compared to the horror of drowning. I too envision kittens in pillow cases.... :( I have a neighbor who...
