    New hens not laying

Thank you everyone! I was starting to get worried and wondering if I should move them back to their temporary coop. I’ll try to be patient and hope they start laying soon

    New hens not laying

Should hace Added that they were segregated and slowly integrated into one coop and run. There has been some hen pecking and dominance but no blood shed.

    New hens not laying

hello, nearly a month ago I bought 6 new RTL hens (3 barred rock 3 Colombian). None have started to lay. I realize they may have been slightly stressed from the change and being added to an exsisting flock (6 1 year old red sexed link). However, they are all co exsisting in one coop and run. I...

Should I or shouldn’t I buy more hens?

Has anyone ever introduced chicks to an exsisting hen house? Is it easier than introducing pullets?

Should I or shouldn’t I buy more hens?

My coop and run is 10 x8. We had 10 pullets to start with but have lost a few. Ideally, I’d like to add a few others and keep the original crew however I’m not set up for quarantine. I’m debating on a second coop for the new ones

Should I or shouldn’t I buy more hens?

I’d like to buy more RTL hens this spring. However, I currently have 7 hens (almost a year old). If I do buy some, can they be housed with the original crew or should I have a second coop built? Also, I’ve heard that laying hens after a year will slowly stop laying and prior to that their eggs...

    Should I stock pile eggs?

I’m in Ontario, Canada so freezing eggs is a strong possibility if I leave them outside.

    Should I stock pile eggs?

At the moment I keep my fresh eggs in a basket on the counter. If I start to stock pile them I was thinking I would put them in egg cartons on the bottoms shelf of my fridge. Anyone have other storage tips?

    Should I stock pile eggs?

With winter officially here, I’ve noticed that my hens have started to slow down on their egg production. I’m getting from 7 hens 5-7 eggs a day. I know eventually they will likely stop laying all together for the winter. When should I start to stock pile my eggs? I would like to have enough to...

    Beat up chicken?

Could they possibly need more protein? I had a few I noticed starting to pick on one hen. I gave them some tuna or scrambled eggs a couple times a week and they seem to be ok now.

Removed all eggs from nest box

I use golf balls. I noticed when I took them out thinking they didn’t need them anymore that they started to lay inside the coop. Once I put them back in they used the nesting boxes. Haven’t had any issues since.

    Winterized! I think....

I bought a heated water base from the local feed store. It only keeps it warm when the temperature drops below -10. If I find it doesn’t work well on the extreme cold days I have to waters and will keep one inside and rotate them out.

    Winterized! I think....

There are small holes in the roof peak still that will hopefully allow some air flow without giving them too much of a cold breeze

    First frost - HELP

I just purchased a heated water base from my local feed store ( my water froze last night at -10 c) This should keep it from freezing for most of the nights but on the very cold days I have two jugs. I plan on keeping one in at night in order to prevent it from freezing.

    Winterized! I think....

I knew it was coming but it finally end below 0 last night (-10c). I wrapped the run in thick construction plastic, covered all the vents in the coop, added another bag of wood shavings inside the coop and gave the chickens a new bale of straw to play with. When I checked on them this morning...

    She came home!!!

Update: Belle has been in the coop/run with her sisters all day. A few scuffles but nothing too major. She's sleeping in the coop tonight on the lowest roost by herself but she's in there. I have the trail cam on again tonight to try and see what is trying to get inside the coop. Hope all goes...

    Something got my chicken :(

If you have a hunting store around you, you could always buy coyote pee to put around the coop. I have friends that have had success with it. I'm thinking I'll be trying it myself.
