    Bloat with cloudy brown liquid

One of my girls has a bloated belly. It's liquidy, not hard. Her vent is looking fine - not pucked or red. I lubed up my finger and didn't feel an egg. I checked and saw posts about ascites. Yesterday I gave her some Thistle Milk. Today I got a needle and drained some of the liquid, It was...

question about chickens using the nest boxes

I just recently started getting eggs. I have been getting 1 egg pretty much every day. When the first egg appeared in the hen house, I finished the nest boxes and have been getting the one brown egg in there since. Since then I only get the one egg each day, except for 1 day I had 2 brown eggs...

I got my first Eggs! now I got a question

I thought only the baby chick food came as medicated - but I know this isn't. Thank you folks for the recommendations. I am so excited to think that I'm gonna be eating my own eggs. Heck, I might even try to finish the coop one of these days. It's usable, just not done -David

I got my first Eggs! now I got a question

I just found 2 eggs today - my first ones! I think they came from the same girl. I have 6 and I was giving them grower food, but they have hardly made a dent in the bag - they have afternoons out in the yard, so I have a ton left. Am I supposed to switch to layer food now? Or since they...

HELP! Running Electric to the Coop

I'd like to add to Saltwater's comments I would run #10, which is rated for 30 amps, but put it on a 20 amp breaker. And I'd tie it into a breaker that was not only GFCI, but also Arc-fault rated. The Arc fault breakers are the latest requirements for bedrooms, but due to the highly flamable...

training chickens to not eat "red" by using thai peppers

I'm sure they have amore limited sense of taste because of the number of taste buds. Kind of like we can't smell anywhere near as well as a dog - doesn't mean we cant smell, onlymeans it's not as good. -David

training chickens to not eat "red" by using thai peppers

Quote: Dude, check your facts: Science Direct The location and number of taste buds were mapped in palatal epithelia of one-day old chicks and bud widths measured. Bud counts additionally were recorded for the tongue, and floor of the lower beak. An average of 316 taste buds was observed in...

    Help for smell?

It's gotta be Food grade. Don't get the cheap stuff used in pool filters - it's poisonous. If in doubt, don't buy it. -David

training chickens to not eat "red" by using thai peppers

It's not that they don't have tastebuds, it's that the capsaicin isn't hot to them.

Need help with wiring and lighting - DH wants install electrical

Moet, 30 amp is #10 wire. If you are putting in a sub panel, I'd do the 30amp, but I like to oversize. Also I wouldn't do the direct bury wire - instead use conduit, it will protect the wire much more than direct bury and is a lot cheaper. The GFCI - instead of a GFCI outlet, use a GFCI...

Need help with wiring and lighting - DH wants install electrical

Just an fyi - an outlet doesn't draw any power, it's what's plugged into it that draws power, so definately put an outlet any place that would be convenient. And don't forget to put one outside and in the run. That goes for the light too - definately put one outside and in the run.

WOW, look at this!!! DONE and Updated with new pictures!

That is seriously one beautiful coop. I love the way he made the shape on the one side of the run mimic the house with the nest boxes. When I go through my expansion (haven't even finished the original yet) I think I am going to take my inspiration from this one - especially the wine cup...

My first coop (not done yet, but habitable) - looking for weak spots

Dogfish, you are certainly correct. I was intending to put the supports in there. Pat, I was going to trim the length of the panels in place, just haven't gotten there yet - the sides actually don't overhange more than 1/2" (or won't after the 1x4 trim is put on the side you see, it's...
