My chicks are 5 weeks old. They haven't made it outside to the coop yet (still need the gate on the run and a door cut in the coop). They currently reside in the dog crate in the basement.
Are they old enough that I can turn their light off?
I had a chick hatch last night that was not typical. It was almost like it hatched back first. It laid in the same place all last night and today. When I took all the chicks out today and put them in the brooder, I got a better look at it. One leg goes out behind it. and it's just laying...
I have chicks hatching like crazy in my incubator - have 10 already out and a few more in the process. My humidity is at 75% and the windows are all steamed up with water droplets. Both vent holes are open. I'm using an LG stillair.
Is it okay? Do I just leave it alone? Should I quickly...
Just wondering if anyone has experienced any problems by leaving the eggs right in the turner and unplugging it for hatch.
My last hatch was a disaster, starting with the lone chick pinging eggs all over the incubator....which got me (a first timer) nervous enough to open the incubator and start...
Today has been a really crappy hatching day.
I had an egg pip at 1130 am. Had another pip at 1230 pm.
The 1130 egg was zipping most of the day and when I checked it at 715, it wasn't moving at all. No breathing, No chirping, Nothing.
To top it off, I'm pretty sure it's my fault. In my...
My humidity is sticking in the 48-50% range.
It's been suggested to me to put a washcloth in for extra humidity.
I think this is a great idea, except I use fabric softner. Does anyone know if this would be harmful?
When I smell my cloths (dry) I can smell lavender vanilla.....
Sounds silly...
1. How do I know if an embryo has died? I have an egg that has a lot of blood in it. It looks different than the other 15 that are in the incubator. I'm pretty sure it's dead but with my luck, if I toss it, that'll be the only one that's actually alive.
2. When I go into lockdown, can I...
First, sorry. I couldn't think of an intelligent Subject.
I currently have 16 eggs in the incubator, which at this point are all viable. Without counting my chickens before they hatch ( ), we're planning to keep 6-8 for eggs and butcher the remaining.
I'm trying to plan out my chicken...

This website says to keep temps at 99.5 for forced air, but 101.5 for still air.
Is this correct?
I've been keeping my still air in the 99-100 range. Is this going to slow the chicks growth?
Just curious! :-)
I'm on day 3, using a still air incubator.
My temps are holding perfectly.
Yesterday, my humidity jumped to 70%. Is it possible to have humidity too high?
I got 2 dozen eggs from Peeper7 this afternoon and they are nice and toasty in the incubator as we speak!
This is the official start of my Backyard Homestead and backyard flock! I started planning this for four years ago and some life changes forced me to have to wait until now.
The...
Hello.
I'm Nellie. Mama to Lizzie and Maggie and Fiance to Jeremy.
We are planning to start the journey of backyard chickens this year. :-)
My parents had chickens when I was a kid and I've never forgotten the taste of fresh eggs. Yummmm!
I'd like to incubate some eggs and see if I can...
