    Dirty duck eggs

I agree with Lynxfire... if you gave them a deeper bedding, they will likely make a nest. Ours immediately made a nest once we switched from shavings to a deep straw bedding. It’s a community nest and they’re never as clean as the chicken eggs, but it made a big difference. Of course, everything...

    Question Re: Crested

Thanks, @chickens really . I’ve never seen a crest at hatch before, but it seemed to be the whole top of the skull. This will be the first time I pray for a drake!

    Question Re: Crested

My husband threw some pekin/roen mutt eggs in one of those tiny $20 incubators on a whim and actually got one to hatch. Much to my dismay, he’s crested. (I say “he”, but I have no idea what it is.) He’s absolutely adorable, and being a singleton has completely bonded to us. (Both awesome and...

    Appleyard vs. Welsh Harlequin ducks

I don’t have any information for you on adults, but had to share that I recently received nine Welsh Harlequin ducklings by mistake from a hatchery. I intended to rehome them ASAP as I just don’t have room for “oopsie” ducks, but after having them for a few days, I’m torn. They are the...

    Double Layer

I have several other hens but she’s the only white egg layer, so I know for sure where they come from. To my knowledge she wasn’t laying multiples before she took her winter break, so maybe she’ll go back to her usual routine. Fingers crossed.

    Double Layer

I have a year old Pekin hen that has been laying TWO giant eggs every morning. We are on day six now. They have plenty of oyster shells and are on duck layer feed in addition to free range and produce treats but I’m worried about her bones if she keeps this up. Is there anything else I should be...

    Hen with bloody rear end

Yep, and therein lies the problem. I free range completely. They don’t know what a fence is, so I’d have to build a duck prison for him and give him a life sentence. I kind of think that’s crueler than just butchering. :(

    Hen with bloody rear end

He's in duck jail now, against my husband's better judgement. My concern now is that this drake is a big Roen, and I plan to start an Ancona laying flock this spring. If this is what he does to Pekin and Roen hens, what chance will the smaller Anconas have? We kept him around when the other...

    Hen with bloody rear end

Thanks for your thoughts, everyone. She's been laying for several months so it's not new layer thing. After getting a hold of her and a nice long soak in a warm tub, its not a prolapsed vent and she doesn't appear to be eggbound. I'm considering having fat roast drake for Sunday dinner.

    Hen with bloody rear end

Looking for some thoughts from the experts... I have a 9 mo. old Pekin hen that had quite a bit of bright red blood on her rear this morning when we let the flock out for the day, tho she acted fine. There weren't any eggs in their house, and I couldnt see anything protruding that would indicate...

    Help! Loud females

I don't know how folks with close neighbors make ducks work noisewise. We only have four now and they are so loud, all. the. time. They free range on several acres and we can keep track of them just by sound. My roens love to yell at the top of their lungs for no reason, all hours of the day...

    Long Time Lurker...

Hi all! I've been a longtime follower of BYC, but just lurked around soaking up the great info. Figured it was time to finally join. My husband and I live on 6 acres in Iowa and decided to give poultry a try this spring. We started with 7 free range Pekin and Rouen ducks for pets and eggs...
