    moving to coop this week

They do have a lot of feathers. I can't tell if they are "fully" feathered though. They are flying like crazy and can fly out of the brooder which has two foot high walls. I'm not sure I could block off an area that they wouldn't be able to fly over.

    moving to coop this week

My chicks are getting too big for the brooder. They will be five weeks on Monday and at this point I've turned off the heat lamp. The brooder is in the house so it doesn't get below 65 at night. However, outside it still dips below freezing at night but is pretty nice during the day. I'm...

Realized someone 1/60 of a second too late

Thanks. They all freak out a bit when that big bright light went off. I felt bad and only did it once.

Realized someone 1/60 of a second too late

I now realize that baby chicks do NOT like camera flashes!

Stop me before I make a mistake

I spent good amount of time last night running through designs in my head. I'm going to stay with the 8x8 and modify the design so it doesn't cost quite so much to build. That way it satisfies my desire for a big coop and my desire to save money. It will be a win win all around. I'll post...

Which way should my windows face?

Now that I've got my coop size figured out I need to know which way my windows should face. We have relatively cool summers (mid 80s) with a few weeks out of the year that push 100. Our winters can be fairly cold (though this year was mild). I want to face my windows east so I can pick up any...

Stop me before I make a mistake

I get it. Thanks. I've had two teenage boys living in a room too small for them and the smell was just awful sometimes. They never resorted to cannibalism but they were close a few times. I would hate to walk into a coop and get the feeling that my chickens were eying ME for dinner. I think...

Stop me before I make a mistake

Quote: I'm assuming that a smaller coop would need to be cleaned more often. Daily? Bi-weekly, weekly? I don't know the answer to Q2 because of my lack of "poultry language." I have Buffs, Wyandottes, Australorps and Brahmas. So, please tell me what I'm getting. I would like to free range...

Stop me before I make a mistake

Okay, here's the deal. I just started on my coop but I think I might be over building. At this point I've got a really nice 8x8 platform built. I plan on building the coop on top of that. Not a bid deal if I have to scrap my plans since I will just use it as a tent platform for sleeping out...

    Heat Lamp question

Thanks all. I haven't had a chance to get pictures up yet since I'm trying to figure out which coop to build. Yes, I ordered chicks without a coop. Yes, my wife thinks I'm crazy too. I call it motivation. I'll try to get something posted soon. I'm taking two days off this week to get a...

    Heat Lamp question

Got the phone call this morning at 5:30am. I had forgotten which phone number I gave the hatchery so I had both cell phones and the land line next to the bed. When the call came I knew immediately what it was. I woke the girls up (12 & 14) and drove down to get them. The box was warm, and...

    Heat Lamp question

I bought a standard household dimmer switch and an electrical switch box (like the housing used when hooking up a light switch). I cut my extension cord in half, ran the halves into the box, wired the dimmer and nailed the box to a joist. It was really very simple, even to someone like me with...

    Freaking out in Idaho

Thanks for the note. We bought Buff Orpingtons (because I love the sound of the name) Light Brahmas, Silver Laced Wyandottes and Black Astraulorps. My girls are excited (one even started a blog) though I'm really kind of nervous.

    Heat Lamp question

Thank you so much! I am feeling much better. I can tell you that my girls are really excited and I lay awake at night wondering if I'm able to keep these little guys alive. I'm sure you all will be my life line for a few weeks. I'll post some pictures as soon as they arrive. Yes, i did...

    Heat Lamp question

I've got my brooder built and ready for the my new chicks to arrive Monday or Tuesday. I mounted my heat lamp with two hooks (in case one fails) and turned it on. I put a thermometer in the bottom and the temperature directly below the lamp came to a nice and toasty 95 degrees. However, 12...

    Freaking out in Idaho

Hello. I, like many others have lurked around this forum for many weeks looking for answers but now that my chicks arrive early next week I figured it was time to sign up to absorb some confidence before they get here. I am completely new to chickens, though I feel like I've got a good head...
