    Listless hen after fox attack

Hi All, We had an Xmas eve fox attack in which three of our chickens disappeared. The next day two showed up...they were apparently hiding in the garage behind a pile of chairs. An Australorp was missing some neck feathers and her tail is all but gone but she integrated with the flock and...

Barred rock likes to spend the night out

I have a barred rock, one of a flock of ten hens, who for the last few nights has disappeared and doesn't show up until dawn. She seems to be laying somewhere as my neighbor's dog now comes home with an egg from time to time. All the others lay in the hen house. I have them ranging with...

I have a Barred Rock pullet who just started laying her eggs. Only she is dropping her egg from a 4-foot high roost. Obviously they land on the floor and break. Any suggestions?

    free-range ideas?

Hi All, I've had my chickens in my backyard in the Bronx, but I've just moved them to my country house in upstate NY. I have built a nice hen house for them and a run, but I'd like them to free-range. I let them out, but they want to free range in my garden and my wife's flower beds, among...

    transporting chickens

I have 10 ten week old chickens. In a couple of weeks I'll need to transport them about 160 miles...a three hour trip. What's the best way of doing this? I've got a Honda Civic...not a truck. Any ideas? What kind of shipping crates can I use? Do they need food and water during the trip? Thanks

    keeping food inside or outside?

I have 9 week old chickens and I've been taking the food and water outside to the run during the day and then transferring the feeder and waterer to the henhouse at night. Do I need to be doing this? Should I just keep the food and water in the henhouse? The chicks tend to stay outside all...

    Rain?

It's raining and in the low fifties here in the Bronx in New York City. I have 10 almost-nine week old chickens. I'm debating if I should let them out in the rain and cold? Should I let them have access to the outside or just keep them in the henhouse today?

8 week olds won't go into their house on their own

Hi, I have 10 8-week olds--two Australorps, four Barred Rocks, and 4 Rhode Island Reds. They are in very good shape, running around in the coop and enjoying themselves. The coop house is raised two feet and I have a ramp from the run into the house. However, the chickens refuse to go in at...

almost two week old chick with a problem

Hi, I'm new to this forum and have a question. I have chicks that are 11 days old. All are doing really well, but one, a barred rock, is runtish. She arrived in the mail in a semi shock, but quickly got out of that. She's a bit sluggish and tends to lie down a lot. She's drinking and eating...
