I disagree that any chick needing assistance isn’t healthy; I have assisted plenty of chickens and geese in my time hatching and the majority of them are perfectly normal and grow into perfectly normal animals. There are plenty of variables for chicks that need assisting, not just health issues...
I’ve had plenty of normal/seemingly healthy eggs not hatch or hatch with issues that require culling. I just don’t see the difference. All hatching has risk involved, and yes, there is certainly the allure of the novelty of twin chickens.
I don’t see the issue here. If they don’t make it, then...
I’ve got a doubler set in the incubator (could see two yolks when candled tonight) I set them with a few more so if anything hatches there’s a friend.
Just going to keep track of my progress here. Will update when I candle to see what happens.
I think we will set it with a handful more just to see. I sell the majority of my hatching eggs and will only be hatching/keeping a few hens to rotate into the flock. I can’t in good faith sell it so we can try to hatch it and document what happens.
May I join? I’ve currently got 13 eggs in the incubator, in a two batch split. We’ve got a group due March 7 and a group due March 18.
So far I’m 5/5 in the first batch and fairly certain I’m 7/8 in the second but they’ve got a few more days before I toss duds.
Can’t wait for babies.
ive got what I am fairly certain is a double yolker. I’ll attach a picture but it’s huge, bigger than my duck eggs.
Has anyone had luck hatching twins and having both survive? I’m tempted to throw this one in the incubator and see what happens.
Duck egg on left, regular chicken egg on right.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Definitely not new to chickens or other backyard birds, we were on hiatus in DC for a few years (thanks to the military) but we are home now and regrowing our flock
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
8 mottled English...
