Dealing with vent feather-picking during/after moulting

In Spring we could, but not now. If anything, their space will be getting smaller as it gets colder.

Dealing with vent feather-picking during/after moulting

StaceyJ, thank you for taking the time to reply. I have grit and oyster shell, both as free choice, always. Also free choice pellet feed, and a five-gallon waterer that we change out for fresh water every other day. What do you suggest we do otherwise?

Dealing with vent feather-picking during/after moulting

Ive read so many of your posts, I feel like I know you. Thank you, thank you again @oldhenlikesdogs. I appreciate your wisdom. But....they didn’t moult. And they’re feather-picking. So what do I do? I can’t get rid of the predators?

Dealing with vent feather-picking during/after moulting

Our 12 girls are now 6 1/2 months old, and we’re now in the 30 degree (F) range at night here in New Hampshire. I have a few “chicken friends” here in my small town, and their girls lost a lot more feathers than mine did, but they’re now growing back. Our girls either lost nothing at all, or...

    She seems tiny.

Izzy is adorable. I wonder when I see feed stores posting ages of chicks. I think they’re estimating! I know right where you are-ish! I used to go down there all the time when my daughter was on a traveling field hockey team!

    She seems tiny.

She looks right for a week old. What other breed(s) of the same age are you comparing her to? BTW, I love her little crest! Also BTW where in NH are you? I’m in Tilton.

Six Week Old Cochin Is So Tiny!

That’s great to hear. Slow and steady wins the race, or so I’m told. I’m also seeing bald spots filling in, and the appearance of health with slow growth. I have faith in our little ones!!

Ooh, he’s such a cutie! Keep me posted as to how he feathers out. Mine’s not a bantam, but Chicken Dad has taken to calling her Bantam as her given name, and I think it may stick. She’s his favorite, so he must get naming rights

That’s great! I’m hoping to not hear any crows, squeaky or otherwise, but I’m so happy for you! My three Cochins have the craziest feathery feet, even my little mottled girl that I worry about. It makes them look so fancy, even though they’re only half-grown!

Six Week Old Cochin Is So Tiny!

For some reason I never got any notification of the last few responses to my thread, so I’m just seeing this now. My little Cochin is doing a bit better, but is still feathering/growing SO slowly. I’ve been supplementing with the scrambled eggs and they love it. You mentioned that your girls...

Hey there, I was just browsing around in the NH posts, and I saw your post from Feb about buying organic feed in bulk. Have you had any interest? I’d love to join in to save on organic feed. Totally willing to travel to pick up. Where are you located? We’re in Tilton.

Just wanted to show someone because... well the photos speak for me

So cute and sweet! I love how a couple of them are posing for their individual baby portraits. You’ll be so glad you took those after they’ve grown!

Six Week Old Cochin Is So Tiny!

Thanks for the vote of confidence, and glad you agree she’s a pullet! Guess we’re all having scrambled eggs for breakfast every day next week! Everyone except Chicken Dad is excited for that, lol!

It sounds like a good idea. My neighbors have a few layers, and I could easily get a couple of fresh eggs from them to scramble, with or without another supplement. Couldn’t hurt!

Ack. I can go to Agway tomorrow morning. I’ll wait and see if anyone else has an opinion. I don’t want to do any harm to my birds. Thanks all for responses so far

Six Week Old Cochin Is So Tiny!

I fed them Nature’s Best Organic Starter feed from TSC. This week I finished a 40lb bag, so I switched to same brand, Starter/Grower. I supplement with organic baby spinach as a treat, and I give them Dumor chick grit. All the others are big, and feathered. Where would I find show bird feed...

Give me a sec and we’ll try to catch her. No red comb/no wattle development.
