I got a 8 eggs from a coworker to incubate in my classroom and ended up with 8 beautiful chicks, though I have no idea what breeds they are. My coworker has a mixed flock so she has an idea of what some of the moms are but I didn't know if anyone would be helpful on here. Here they all just a...
I had one hatch at like 11pm on day 22 (when day 22 started at like 8 am) just a few days ago. I thought for sure it wasn't going to hatch but sure enough he came out!
My mom, and her whole family, are from Victor, IA! I think next year I'd be interested in doing ducks instead of chickens in our classroom. Let me know how you are enjoying it!
I had 8 eggs total. This guy pipped early (day 19) and hatched today (day 20). He was the smallest egg though so he may just not have needed as much time. He's been out for a little bit now. Still trying to dry off. I cracked the incubator a bit to help lower the humidity without changing the temp.
My first egg hatched today. There was still blood in the shell with what looks like some yolk? This is my first time so I don't know what's in the 'normal' range for this stuff. I provided a picture. The little guy came out fine, chirped a bunch, tumbled into everyone else, and is taking a nap...
You really can't go wrong with the DSM area. Everywhere is pretty nice. I like the area East of DSM because I feel like it's easier to get into downtown than from the west side. I was also an east of DSM kid so that probably affects my opinion. lol
I drained all the water today and am running it dry (about 22% humidity) so hopefully it will help increase the air sacs a bit. Thank you for the advice!!
To find a country acreage, you'd have to look outside the metro area. Going east of the metro there would be Bondurant/Mitchellville/Altoona area which is nice. Otherwise if you go South you could go out by Norwalk or Indianola. I personally grew up in the Altoona area and loved it. It's pretty...
Thank you for your response! I didn't read too much about incubation humidity and temperatures before I started. I read through the guide a few times and went by their information. It wasn't until I got more into this site that I felt like my numbers were on the higher range of what people do...
Thank you! I'll have to make sure I am checking number three again well. It's a pretty symmetrical egg so I struggled to know which side was small and big end as they were basically the same size.
If I remember correctly, this one had movement, but not a lot. I'll have to check that one...
Thank you everyone for the welcomes! I'm excited for this resource to help me be a better chicken farmer. I did post over in the incubation forum about my egg's air sacs (I feel like they are smaller than what all the diagrams say they should be), but haven't gotten any help yet. Hopefully...
Hey everyone! I'm from Marshalltown, IA and I just joined BYC. I am incubating my first batch of egg. I have 8 eggs going right now in my classroom that I got from a coworker.
Hello! I'm a 26 year old wife, toddler mama, teacher, and newly established Chicken Mama.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I have 8 eggs that I am currently incubating as a part of an innovative to help increase my student's attendance. I got the idea of 'class...
