    Hardware cloth mesh size

Ouch - “parts” of chickens. 😬

    Hardware cloth mesh size

Oh we definitely are getting a good roof. The hawks are the biggest problem here.

    Hardware cloth mesh size

I’m in South Jersey - not near any lakes. The snakes here are small garter snakes - (at least that’s what I’ve always called them) & they’re pretty benign. I haven’t had problems with eggs being stolen - it’s the chickens being killed I’m trying to avoid. I was thinking of 1” mesh, just for the...

    Hardware cloth mesh size

We’re rebuilding our run & I’m replacing the existing fence with hardware cloth. I see people recommending 1/2” mesh, but would like to go with a larger mesh size. I don’t want to have to do this twice, so any advice about using a bigger mesh is appreciated. I don’t have issues with small...

    Dag on hawks!

I had 4 birds killed by a red tailed hawk in a week last spring - all under a hawk net. I doubled up the net & that worked for a year. Then a month ago another kill. My husband chased it away, but it returned. It landed right on the net & looked for an opening it could fit through. I saw it in...

What just eats head / neck?

We decided to rebuild our whole chicken run. I’m lucky I have a handy & understanding hubby! I’m going all out to make it predator-proof this go around. &#€! varmits!

Help! My wife is mad at me for feeding the chickens pizza!

    I agree with your answer, but .... what’s a “spare kid”? 😉

What just eats head / neck?

Thanks everyone for feedback. The feathers were all around her. I never thought about the saliva thing. I have doubled up hawk net, as I lost 4 birds in a week one spring to a juvenile hawk. That’s why I was dubious about it being a raptor. I’ve captured 4 raccoons in the past 6 months, so I’m...

What just eats head / neck?

I just lost my best girl to a predator. What kills but just eats the head & neck area? I suspect a raccoon but no other clues. The hawk net seems secure but I found one small area that might have been dug under the fence. 😢

    Combining / integrating mature flocks

They don’t free range - we have a big hawk population here. The fox found a opening in (I have a very large fenced run) at 3am. Some of my gals had taken to sleeping on the coop roof at night. They’ve always done this in summer. Not any longer. thanks for all your input. :)

    Combining / integrating mature flocks

Thanks Ridgerunner. I’m still in the “thinking about it” mode, but that’s good advice.

    Combining / integrating mature flocks

Hi all. I recently lost 4 hens to a fox & am down to 5 chickens. They’re happy, healthy & laying well. They have worked out pecking order & get along, no issues. I’ve had an offer to take over an existing flock of 6 hens - the owner is moving & can’t take them. I have a big enough coop & a huge...

    Chicken laying small eggs

I have 5 Easter-eggers that are 4 months old & some stared laying last week. All very small eggs. This morning I had one the size of a marble. The big egg is from a 3yo Americauna.

Why are the yolks off center?

Thanks - it does make sense.

Why are the yolks off center?

This isn’t a very critical issue, but now that it’s deviled egg season again, my curiosity has again been aroused. My yolks are always near the edge of the egg, sometimes barely covered by the white. Is there a way to get more centered yolks for better deviled eggs?

    Heating pad for chicks

I question/ answer on the sunbeam site for this model is pretty frustrating. They answer the automatic shutoff question from different people with both “yes” & “no”. :(. I also see them telling people not to use an extension cord or it may get an error and shut off. I want to put this in my...

Chickens sleeping ON the coop, not IN it

I will try putting them in after bedtime, there’s no way I can run them down while they’re wide awake. IDK what goes on in the coop after bedtime - what happens in the coop stays in the coop. The Wyandotte’s were staying in there at the beginning, but quickly followed the lead of the sexlinks &...

Chickens sleeping ON the coop, not IN it

I added 6 new chickens this year, they’re 8 months old. From the time I integrated them in with my older 4 chickens, they’ve chosen to sleep on top of the coop. There’s plenty of room for them inside & when they’re outside they all play together. I’m worried now that winter is coming that they...
