    Longer tail feathers in chicks?

I have two buff orps about 2 weeks old. One has longer wing feathers and a huge tail already, while the other is more slowly developing and does not have the large tail (barely has a tail at all). Could this difference be an indication of gender?

Does this sound like an oppossum?

Last week, at night, something chewed through the thick wire surrounding the chicken coop and entered the house, killing my favorite girl. :( She was the only casualty, she was fully intact (ie head still on) except for part of her breast/gut was eaten. There were feathers strewn about but...

Motion Sensor Lights to Keep Away Coons?

http://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Motion-Sensor-Light-Super-Bright/dp/B001LJKLT4/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top ^ Link to Amazon's LED motion sensor light. Would several of these lights around the coop/run be enough to deter raccoons? What if I doubled this up with a motion sensor alarm? A...

    Wing bruise?

I have a 3 month old BO who got in a tangle with a hawk the day before yesterday. I thought she had been taken for good, only to have her show up 8 hours after the attack. I took her inside because she was bleeding, and found a 3/4" hole under her left wing. It wasn't bleeding profusely, by...

Hawk got two of my pet chickens...

I normally do not let my chickens out of the coop, but I was off yesterday and decided it would be okay, especially since I would just be inside cleaning. About an hour after letting them out, I heard chicken screams and I ran to the window and saw a hawk grab my favorite girl, my BO Poppy! I...

    Silver 'Dotte Roo or Pullet?

My 5 and 1/2 week old dotte Blanche. She's my favorite out of my 10 babies but there's something suspicious about her wattles forming already. Granted she is a hatchery chick and is definitely not up to breed standards, but I'm a worry wart and it's been bothering me. What do you guys...

    Can my chicks go outside?

I have 10 chicks at 5 weeks of age currently living in my basement brooder. It has been so hot out lately and I feel it's high time they were out of my house! :) I live in western NC and it has been in the upper 80s during the day and upper 50s to mid 60s at night. I let them outside during...

    Brahma baby: Hen or roo?

So I think it's a dark Brahma, seeing as it has a pea comb, but I'm not sure at all. I'm praying it's a rooster, I need one to keep the girls in check. It's about 4 weeks old.

    Is this a partridge cochin?

These are the packing peanut roos that Ideal sent with us our last order. They're super cute and I may keep one, but I'm dying to know what they are. They are a mute brownish color with darker brown strips going down their back. They have feathered feet and a brown head. If this picture...

    Old English chicks?

A farmer gave us 2 dozen eggs to incubate from his assorted bantams/standards, and we had no idea what they'd look like before the hatch. 12 hatched yesterday, and they are mainly brownish/red with black chipmunk stripes. One is black with a white spot on his head (Barred rock?), one is a...

Do pet mallards fly south for the winter?

I live in western North Carolina, and was wondering if my 2 pet mallards would fly south for the winter? They're just a day old, but I'm already starting to worry. We don't have any wild ducks in our pond, but there is a lake a few miles from here with many. Would they take off with these...

    Purina Medicated Start & Grow?

I took my first trip to TSC today! ...And came home with 2 mallards! It was kind of a quick decision, and I ended up buying them Purina Medicated Start & Grow, as this was what TSC was feeding them. After coming home and researching, I saw a lot of people had mixed feelings about feeding...
