My hen is an olive egger and my roo is a bantam silkie. I have two chicks from their cross. If the chicks grow up to be egg layers, just wondering what to expect as far as egg color.
Thanks!
Yep, mine does that too. I have never heard of a hen actually starving herself to death sitting on a clutch of eggs - people say it can happen, but I've never heard of a story where it actually did.
I can have a full waterer but if I put out a small dish of water, the chickens all go crazy...
it sounds like you left her with the other chickens instead of separating her right? my broody hen leaves on her own and is back on the nest within the same hour. Some days I see her out, some days I don't but it doesn't mean she didn't go out. Her eggs just started hatching tonight. Just make...
hey thanks, this is great advice Feathered and Cragg. Sorry to hear about your 7 eggs Cragg... it might end up being my experience as well.
Will I need to supplement with teramycin drops for the chicks since they won't get medicated feed or are they much less likely to need antibiotics because...
I tried searching threads but the search function is not loading correctly.
Our wheaten maran hen is hatching out eggs for the first time. The roo is a silkie bantam. The eggs are from the wheaten maran hen and two olive egger hens. Would there be any issue genetically for this not to work...
and this was my bounty after work last night... another speckled brown and a tan.
it's not possible for a chicken to lay 5 eggs in two days... right? even if she is the rooster's favorite?
of the other breeds, who else would lay a brown egg? could one of the olive eggers?
okay just did my evening check for eggs... and I have another little speckled brown egg. surely miss Patagonia ("patty") the maran couldn't have laid three eggs in one day right, with one of them being a lighter tan color? There is no one here that would be playing pranks on me.
I saw the...
okay good to know. She has given me a double yoked egg already. I had thought they can't possibly lay more than one egg a day, and that their egg color doesn't change (except get a bit lighter as the season goes on, especially with the marans). I haven't noticed a weaker shell but I'll keep an...
that was one of my thoughts too... but he is crowing every morning and night, mounting the other chickens and pulling on the back of their necks. I haven't seen him enter the nest box; he is usually always out with a few ladies free ranging. :D
Hi all,
Question: My hens just started laying in the last two weeks, except the Sicilian has been laying for about 1 month -
I have two olive eggers, one easter egger, one french wheaten maran, and one buttercup sicilian that are hens. I have one silkie bantam rooster (crowing, mating, rooster...
I have 7 chickens, nearing 4 months old. They go into the coop at night just fine but they all squeeze into one nest box to sleep. The roost bars in the coop are untouched. It's usually in the 50s at night. They are cooing and chirping and seem generally happy.
is this typical for the age and...
I just noticed this same thing on my EE, same color as yours, tonight when she wouldn't go for any of the treats like the others did. I tried giving it to her out of my hand but she just put her beak on it, couldn't get anything, and gave up. She’s only 9 weeks old, would this have been...
Hi all,
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes very new (2 months) - we moved onto a little farmette and thought chickens would be a great addition.
...Well except for that one chicken growing up that my brother caught during one of those "feather parties". We lived...
oh no, I'm so sorry :( That sure is a loss. Sounds like your other half had the best of intentions but sadly, reality had a different plan. bug hugs to you
great, thanks guys. the cockerel is my husband's favorite because he's always first to the door and eat out of his hand. that should have been sign #1 eh?
