    March Hatch-A-Long

Nice hatch from shipped eggs. Here are my St. Patty's Day Chicks. Looks like a nice number of pullets. SBELs (CCL x White Leghorn) A couple Iowa Blue chicks from my flock (to fill the incubator for the elementary kids hatching the eggs) 12 Exchequer Leghorn chicks, have wanted these...

This is a lovely little incubator and brooder combo. Most reliable things I've ever had. I picked up a mini and a maxi for the kids at the elementary school to hatch in class and the chicks love the brooders. Here are the first/second grade's St. Patty's Chicks: Exchequer Leghorns Iowa...

Ugh, seems my nights and days are reversed. Thank the 20 hours of craptastic Friday. Fridays are always suckful, but this Friday was just dumb. Back to bed, try to get back on a schedule. At least all the chicklings are all in fresh digs and the surrounding area in the basement vacuumed and...

    March Hatch-A-Long

I just love to hatch and raise the chicks. Invariably, I end up hatching too many for me to keep and have to sell some off. Just tickles me to see them develop.

We're ok on snow, but I'll trade you about 30 mph of the current winds for 1-2 inches of show. Win-win? Lovely coop! Very nice. Gorgeous girls. I picked up two silver laced wyandottes this year to add to my egg laying coop. They're so lovely. The black chick is an Ayam Cemani. Can't...

    March Hatch-A-Long

I've ordered exchequers, have always wanted these. Set 3 days ago - 17 Exchequer eggs, 5 Sapphires (CCL x LH for super blue egg layers), and 4 Iowa Blues to check fertility. Candled a few today, lots of veins in the shipped eggs. Woot! Photo from breeder of the exchex .

    Help with identification

Black unknown has pink feet bottoms. I was calling is a "Black Jersey Giant???" in my records as the chick appearance was spot on to their example photo (their austrolorp photos had more white on the chests, lighter legs), but waiting to see what it does. It's not bigger than the other chicks...

Welcome to BYC. I wish more suburbs were more enlightened on chickens, but glad your neighbors are cool with the chooks. I'm blessed to be on an acreage with neighbors that don't say much. Love my little feathered dinosaurs! Do you have any photos of your chickens?

    Help with identification

LOL, out of 20 chicks, I'm counting on some of the pullets to be cockerels, thanks for the heads up. #1 - Thanks, will watch, wait, and see what comes in coloration / egg color. #2 - Was thinking EE, especially how similar it is to the others, but with straight comb/no beard, figured I'd ask...

    Help with identification

Hello, I obtained 20 chicks that are (supposed to be) pullet chicks from Meyer hatchery. The order included a few specific breeds that I know which ones they are (not pictured), and the rest were a mix of rare Marans and mixed colorful egg basket chicks. For grins, anyone want to weigh in on...

    February Hatch-A-Long

Not so much a breed as a description, I guess. They're lavender, they're easter eggers, and they're fibromelanistic. Can't wait to see these guys mature. The parent stock is beautiful.

And here are the fibromelanistic lavender easter egger chicks. Lavenders always look so scraggly young, lol.

Cold, damp, rainy day, but no snow. Girls are beginning to lay again, which is nice. (I don't put lights on them, so eggs have been spotty.) Got my 8 year old a guitar for his birthday. He is learning the saxophone, but has been really enamored with the idea of playing guitar. His...

The 10th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!!!!!

Setting some eggs for the kids at the school today, Exchequer leghorns and some Sapphire Blue egg layers (CCL x Ex/Wht LH Hens). We can call this the pre-easter hatchalong hatch. Will have to think about what I want to set for Easter. In the meantime, hoping for my xchex! I've wanted...

St. Patrick's Day and First Day of Spring hatch-along 2019!

I'm a little early, but trying to time for the school kids to hatch in class. Set eggs today - 5 sapphire blue egg layers (CCL x LH), 17 Exchequer LH that are shipped eggs (I have wanted xchex for a LONG time, hope we get some to hatch!) and 4 of my own Iowa Blue eggs for fertility check...

My little January chicks are getting so big. At the rate they are growing, they'll be laying next week. ;) Ok, maybe not, but they are huge. They're my buddies, especially Barry (the barred rock, gif below) and Buffy (the buff orpington). OK, ok, not original, I know, but I don't usually...

    Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Gorgeous snow fall this afternoon/evening. I don't have to go to work tomorrow, so I can say that. :smackLOL The chickens took one look out the open door, said a whole bunch o' "NOPE!" and went back in the coop. Gotta wing band the little chicks tonight or tomorrow, other than that just...

The January chicks are growing FAST. Split the crew to two cages for now. Was hoping to eek by on that until temps improve, but looking at the long range forecast, March is not coming in like a warm dandy lion. Ah well, I have a bajillion crates, if I need to expand my basement flock further...
